Carter Dome — Local services in Bean's Purchase

Well, I woke up in the carter notch hut, with 8 feet of snow. put on my snow shoes and started hiking. REALLY steep, a little icy, but climbable. The wind started around halfway up, got to about 35 mph, started snowing, and my group hit the flat part which was fun. We spent 2 min at the top, and started back down. I ended up on the side of a cliff, fearing death, and made it down to the really steep bit. I Descended on all fours reversing down, slow, but safe, and made it down okay, the most scared I have ever been. In the summer, this would be strenuous, but fun. In the winter, I'd recommend some serious crampons, or good snow shoes (probably both)...

started 19 mile trail 40 degrees. hear the 19 mile brook. did the wildcats late fall. beautiful but steep hike up with magnificent views of the colored leaves. then down into carter notch with an incredible view at the lake. very steep up to not much of a view at a pile of rocks on the dome but beautiful down near the hut. tower at he top of wildcat D has...

Oh the slog up from the hut! The gradulality of the nineteen mile brook trail is both a blessing and a curse. If you start from 16, by the time you start the true incline........my knees hurt just thinking about it.
