Edit 1/4/19: 4 stars for a very good experience speaking with the woman in charge about my time at the shelter. Initially this review was at 3 stars for my experience, but the shelter manager has reached out to set things right.

I have recieved another call from the actual manager from the humane society. I had initially requested the manager at the time I had made this review, but apparently somehow one of the vets had gotten the memo instead of the manager. So my whole experience has come back around again as the manager called and calmly explained everything and taken my concerns amicably. Would definitely recommend stopping by here. For the sake of clarity I will leave my initial review up because it is an important part of my experience, but I was extremely happy to have an attentive shelter manager follow up with me after such a long time.

Initial review from December:

We adopted a very sweet old cat from the Humane Society and had a great experience during the adoption process. The facility was very clean, very well organized, although everything felt a little pushy. Shortly thereafter we brought the cat to our vet, who identified significant ear problems and the teeth on one side of her face likely being dead. We got her treatment and I since then had tried to speak with someone at the society about concerns I had about her care.

In reply, the edit:Vetrenarian went off on a raging rant at me at how they don’t have the facilities to check her teeth and ears. Now I wasn’t looking for confrontation, all I wanted was to let someone know that maybe check the cats a bit better or to inquire if there was some way to help them with that. But I couldn’t get a word in edgewise with this woman. She would not let me talk and seemed to think that this was some kind of attack.

I care about animals, we got Marilyn treated as soon as we could. I know people at the humane society care, and there are limits to what can be done. I just wanted to let them know we’d helped Marilyn a bit more. I didn’t need to have someone on the other end of the phone speak to me like I’m 5 in an angry tone, especially after I had explained I wasn’t attempting to make this confrontational.

(And again, that has since happened...

I'll give an extra star due to them caring about animals but the adoption process is too invasive and they tend to deny a lot of applications. I never completed the application process due to the depth of it. My wife is dying of cancer and wanted a kitten. Beaumont Animal Care didn't have any kittens at the time. So we gave the Humane Society a shot and once we found the right building (behind the front building for those like us not familiar). Once we got there, we were told about application (which we already started on line), then an older gentleman took us to the room where the felines were kept. We were told we weren't allowed to stick our fingers in the cages but could put our hands flat palmed against the cages but when we were brought back, my adult stepdaughter was scolded for even touching the cages. Then the gentleman brought us into a "meeting room" but we saw him bring out the kitten we chose and then, after talking at a woman at the front desk, we were informed we weren't able to visit our potential fur baby until our application was approved. We gave up and went to Beaumont Animal Care a week later and found our new fur baby! It was not only $30 less for the adoption fee but also includes shots and microchipping! We were actually able to interact with our potential adopted fur baby along with the application process is MUCH simpler as well! I always supported the Humane Society of Southeast Texas through donations but my first, in person, experience with them leaves me with no choice but to no longer donate to a cause they've seen to have lost their goal....to re-home strays and give homes to the fur babies. The process is almost as involved as adopting a human child! I understand why they had WAY more cats and kittens compared to ANYONE else in the area. They make it seem is if you have to get a credit check, give a blood sample, and take a polygraph to adopt....

This shelter is absolutely wonderful! The staff truly loves every animal that comes through their doors—you can see it in the way they care for them and interact with visitors. The facility is always clean and welcoming, and the animals are clearly happy and well looked after.

The clinic services are smooth, affordable, and run by compassionate, knowledgeable staff. Whether you’re there for vaccines, spay/neuter, or general care, the process is easy and stress-free.

Adopting from this shelter is honestly a bargain—the adoption fees are incredibly fair considering the pets are already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped and everything else I’m forgetting. Plus, you get a sweet adoption photo to remember the moment you brought your new best friend home! It’s such a thoughtful touch.🥹

The front desk staff is so kind and always greets you right when you walk in. They go the extra mile to make sure every pet goes to a loving, responsible home, and their dedication is truly admirable. Directors Tyler and Edward (I can’t remember for sure, I was too excited about my dog) are so accommodating and genuinely care about both the animals and the people who come to help them.

I’m beyond grateful for this shelter and everything they do for our community....
