Today's bookstore adventure was at a local hidden gem, Whitlock's Book Barn in Bethany, CT. 📚🌳 . Driving through the backwoods of sleepy Bethany and off a quiet road lies Whitlock's. Two red barns on the property hide a treasure trove of rare and preloved books for adults and children. Stepping into these barns was like stepping into a time capsule, and I was so entranced browsing through the shelves and stacks that I lost track of time! 😅 . If you're looking for something fun to do with the kiddos on Summer break (or a day just for yourself!), come and visit Whitlock's Book Barn! ❤️ #booktok #books #reader #bookworm #bookstores #bookstoreadventures #localbookstores #ct #whitlocksbookbarn #newengland #hiddengem #summerreading

This was a great find--a booklover's paradise! Found some fun old children's books and some great first editions (nothing super valuable but cool to find). You could literally spend hours here browsing. And that was in the smaller barn! There was a larger barn also full of books we did not get to. Have to save it for another trip.😀

As soon as I saw this place on Google Maps, I knew it was a must-stop location. The book collection was massive and diverse, the atmosphere was perfect for that "antique bookstore" vibe, and the service was good. If you're like me, plan to spend a couple hours exploring the large collection!

I’m rating this place solely on my experience trying to sell books to this shop. I’ll start off by saying the lady there was very friendly. That said, if you have rare/valuable books, find another place to sell them. What I was offered for the books I brought in, and had cherry picked (I will say some of them weren’t in the best of condition so I understand this to an extent) and offered only a small fraction of what they are worth and being sold for on eBay and Abe Books. It seemed as if they get their business in selling volume and not quality. I’m not going to knock them on the type of business they do, but unless you have cheaper end books you’re just trying to offload, this place isn’t for you as a seller. Again, this rating isn’t as a buyer, so I can’t speak to that as far as...

I got turned around trying to find the picturesque barns in the woods, so only had 15 minutes before closing, BUT I picked up 5 books for the BOATING collection for under $20 and they have been pretty fascinating. The children's chapter book The Sea Is Blue has winsome two-color illustrations from 1046. Scholastic nonfiction published The American Turtle (about top secret submarine in revolutionary war.) While the way point guide for deep ocean cruising is a bit above my skill level, I am eager to sink my teeth in literary fiction describing voyages of Sir Francis Drake. PLUS, I noticed Dumpy the Dumptruck Saves Christmas by Julie Andrews Edwards and her daughter Emma, which adds to my collection. SO worth the trip & the owners...

Whitlock's Book Barn is my favorite bookstore! They have two barns full of books that are all organized by genre, demographic age, etc. so that it is really easy to find things. One barn is absolutely full of books that are all $5 or less. The other barn has more rare books, as well as the register to make your purchases. The two-barn organization makes it very easy to shop within your price range. Even when I don't find something I want to buy, I love just browsing the book barns and being surrounded by books. Whitlock's is definitely worth checking out if you love books!

One thing to be aware of though is that the barns are not very accessible. One of them has a really slanted floor that can be...
