I had read about a discount store near Ottumwa off the Hwy. It took me awhile to find the name but I was glad to find out more info and to be able to shop there. I went on a Saturday and it was busy. I will come during the day next time. If you are coming from the Des Moines area research into different ways to get there. My ride down I took the interstate and went thru Ottumwa, there were a lot of potholes and skinny streets. My ride home was not the same but the roads were good. It seems like there might be regulars who go there. From other patrons we had some looks according to an adult and teen daughter. I didn't notice. I just assumed we do not look like we live in the area or they were surprised by our large family. The staff was mainly friendly and cheerful. I appreciated the written on sale products when I walked in the door, bargain boxes and free items set outside. It seemed clean, which is a plus. My favorite section was the refrigerated and freezer section. I was a bit hesitant to stock up as some items were very far past best buy date. The yogurt (I bought several dozen) was around 2 months past best buy date. I had never had dairy products much past best buy. All was fine except 1 brand which was super low calorie. My favorite shelf stable item was huge bags of cheese crackers. We have gone to discount and closeout stores for years. I would say most items are worth a try past the best buy or expiration date. Proteins drinks, powders, bars and shelf stable milks and alternatives we have not had good experience with. Pastas, oatmeal are always a safe choice. Some grain based items like crackers, chips, cereal and sweets can taste a bit stale, off or have a different texture. Not always, it is hit or miss. Most items we have tried 3-6 months are fine. 9 months or older CAN be bad. It is hard to know. We try to stick to foods we use to make meals with and are typically fine with closeout foods. If you have kids it might be best to go during the day during the week to...
Read moreI actually drove to this area to shop at the Dutch store down the road. Disappointed, I started driving home when I saw this store. Oh my goodness! I have never seen prices this low! There were bags of chips as low as ten cents. There was very cheap candy and if you dont mind it being smashed, you can purchase a big bag for less than a dollar. They have cheap marinades and all sorts of affordable cereal. There are regular priced items too. Also, you will need to check the expiration dates. I got a big bag of Dove soaps for about a dollar. All that was wrong was the wrappers...
Read moreVery friendly service, GREAT prices and a wide variety. Since they're a discount grocer, they get random things. Often they are priced to move, but you'll see somethings are priced, what would appear to be, standard grocery store prices. But just be diligent when visiting and watch out front and near the registers for the REALLY good deals. There is also a refrigerated section through two black doors, DON'T miss this section. There's lots of good stuff in the cold room. They only take cash or check, so...
