I wish I could give Starlake Camp 5 stars, however, my children did not have the best experience there. This was their first sleep away camp experience and it wasn't pleasant. My Autistic son was continually bullied by two other campers. He reported it to the counselors and no help was offered. They (camp staff) only reacted when he defended himself after being hit by the other campers and locked in the bathroom again.
My daughter fell and injured herself (an open wound on her hip) and was not treated by the counselors or taken to the nurse. I was not informed until she reported it to me when she returned from camp 3 days after the injury. She required antibiotics and wound care from her pediatrician and at home. Additionally, the counselor in charge of my daughter's cabin withheld food from her on at least one occasion, while offering it to the other girls in the cabin. One of the camp organizers contacted me to inform me about another issue with my daughter but failed to notify me about her injury and mistreatment from the camp counselor.
I called and spoke with the camp director, Captain Douglas, and also emailed the camp organizers about both situations, that was over a week ago and my email has gone unanswered and the follow up call I was expecting from the director has yet to come. I'm disappointed in the lack of communication and sense of urgency, and failure to protect and care for...
Read moreThis camp experience changed my life. Not only were the people and campers actually amazing., but it allowed me to grow as an adult. I have done charity work most of my adult life and I learned this thru my experience at Star Lake. We had people from other countries work at the camp. The four individuals from Sweden, two girls and two boys was wonderful. They were very friendly and I felt at ease with them. I have so many blessed memories of camp, too numerous to write. I have been living in Ohio for 45 years now, but if I lived closer, I would have definitely sent my two wonderful sons to this...
Read moreThis camp is not the best to send your children. The ministry does not actually teach people, it continues to mislead them and not only do they fail at ministry, they lack giving camp counsellors proper protocol about possible ticks in the area. Even if ticks aren’t common in the area, the camp directors should always inform camp counsellors about proper protocol just in case the infirmary doesn’t find all of the ticks. Camp counsellors are underpaid, the camp directors are petty people who pick favourites, and going to this camp is a...
