I had to go to the humane society today to pick up my Great Pyrenees. He is only 8 months old and was scared to death. I went to get him and the front desk lady was incredibly nice! The next lady came out and proceeded to have a poor tone of voice towards me. And told me I need to have him more socialized, buy this certain collar for him and that she had to DRAG him out of the vehicle and when she did he attempted to bite her. First off he's an 8 month old puppy who is scared to death and doesn't know where he is! And second of all what do you think is going to happen when you DRAG a dog out of a vehicle. My dog is super nice! I've taken him to baseball games and he wants everyone to pet him. He's either sleeping or wagging his tail or playing with my cat. She then told me he was very aggressive towards the cats that were around the building. One of the most popular quotes is "some couples fight like cats and dogs"! So keeping that in mind what do you expect? She told me "we know what these dogs are thinking and we understand they are scared" obviously she didn't care about how my dog felt! She says my dog was aggressive but I think she was aggressive. She told me I need to have him be more socialized but I think she needs to be more socialized because how she talked to me was NOT ok. If you are going to be in the public eye and around animals you need to have a better attitude! She made me feel like a 5 year old kid getting a lecture! And she made my dog feel helpless and scared! If she understood how dogs felt then she shouldn't have drug him out of the vehicle. I was so mad to the point I started crying as I walked out of the doors. Thank you to the front desk lady that was super nice! The one star is for the lady that I believe is...

I adopted Herman 3 days ago because he had been at the shelter over 100 days (well really at a foster home much of that time). I was told (& the paperwork said) he was 8 years old. I was given a bag with a few cans of Hill’s KD food (for kidney disease) & asked if he had kidney problems. The only staff working that day said that he was being fed that as a “precaution” because he was found as a stray in January & was dehydrated & was peeing a lot. (??). I specifically asked for all test results & the only person there said I would get them. The director called me that night to say that she is usually involved in adoptions but was traveling. She said that Herman was probably having acute kidney disease & that’s why their vet started him on the special food. She said that acute kidney failure can be reversed (?!). She said no blood tests were done. How could they justify having him on a special diet without testing? I brought him to my vet yesterday for a blood test. He said that Herman was closer to 14 years old (not 8 as I was told!) & deaf. He has thyroid disease & cries through the day & night, which the vet said is common with that disease.

So you lied to me about his age, & you likely knew more about what is currently going on with Herman, with him being deaf, his crying & his overall health. You just assumed he had kidney disease, but you never had him examined?!

I think you lied about his age & overall health because you didn’t want to care for an elderly cat, so you posted on FB about how sweet Herman is, & that he had ZERO applications for adoption in over 100 days.

The only good thing is that Herman won’t have to live in a cold shelter & suffer with thyroid disease symptoms. Shame on you for not...

The first red flag should have been when I asked for an adoption application for a particular cat. They said he was on hold. They also told me they don’t normally do holds. That was Saturday. We very patiently waited until Monday at closing to confirm he still hadn’t been picked up and he was now available. We adopted him immediately. We could have easily gone to another shelter that Saturday for cat, but we wanted him. Come to find out he had giardia. When my boyfriend called to address this they told him another cat or cats had giardia at the shelter. I eventually went in to speak with them about the situation after paying for medication and the $55 fecal sample. They said they had not tested him because they did not believe he had it. I asked “how can you know if he has it or not when he’s in a room full of other cats?” (Is often characterized by loose stool). They couldn’t answer. Come to find out he also has ring worm. Which is “common” in shelter cats. Growing up, we had gotten a cat from the ARL with no issues. I understand that shelter cats or any cat in general is not guaranteed to be 100% healthy but it just says something about an organization that adopts out cats who are sick and go untested and untreated. The First Lady and man we interacted with that Saturday were great. However, all other interactions from then on just went downhill. We are still happy to have him and of course have been treating him properly according to the vet. Unfortunately, we will be taking any further...

We've had pleasant interactions both times we've worked with BAHS. One was an unsuccessful foster to adopt where the dog just didn't quite mesh with ours once we had him at home. BAHS was great and timely in that situation. Just recently, we adopted a bonded pair of kittens and it worked out really well. You can tell how much they care for the animals involved and they were excited when I shared photos of our kittens settled in at home. We also volunteer weekly and after getting to see the 'behind the scenes' portion of the shelter, I can see just how much work it takes to provide the care and energy to keep BAHS running. I think those with criticisms should try volunteering sometime to get a good view of just how much they juggle there. Care of the animals comes first for BAHS and that is the most important part anyway.

We love this place. They went above and beyond when we lost family in an accident. We were able to get the surviving dog, Odie back and they took care of the deceased dog as well. Thank you so much. An extra shout out to Katie for her help.

My dog ran off due to fireworks scaring her and some kind people got her to the Humane Society who promptly read the microchip and called me and we were very happily reunited. Thanks so much!
