Fun and Challenging! When you mire the expectations for the remoteness of the course, this is a fun and challenging course. If I expected this course to have suburban/city country club conditions, then I would be disappointed. Knowing that I am in a very rural area I was happy to play here. The greens were slow but well maintained. The amount of slope and undulation on the greens was impressive. If these greens were fast, there would be a lot of 3 and 4 putts here. You can tell they are putting in an effort to maintain the course and greens well. It's a little rough (pun intended) around the edges but I enjoyed my round, and there are birdies to be made. Several blind tee shots and approaches I would play different the second time. Lots of trees to play around as well if you're errant (I was today, and the abnormal 40-60mph wind didn't help.) The lake on the back nine made for some great scenic holes and the island green is awesome. There are five par 5s here but still only par 72, so an extra par 5 and par 3. That is my favorite layout for a course. The proshop staff was great and courteous. The superintendent even stopped by my cart to apologize for having to wait on the guys mowing the greens. I was the first out and a single so I was pushing the maintenance guys a little. But the apology, even though unnecessary, was nice. Overall, a good experience and a course I...
Read moreThe green fees at a course like this in Iowa would easily be twice as much. Especially with the signature hole having an island green. We played twice when visiting the Broken Bow area. Both times the clubhouse and maintenance staff were so kind and helpful!
On the first visit, my son and I ended up chasing the ground crew around the course. We had the first tee time of the day and might have teed off early. But when we caught the ground crew, instead of being annoyed or making us wait, they stopped what they were doing and moved to the side to let us play through. Then apologized for being in the way. It's refreshing to be treated with such kindness on the course.
The course itself is tough if you don't keep it in the fairway. There is no rough, only pine trees and rocks on the edge of the fairway. And the rocks are quartz, so every one of them looks like a ball. I would recommend playing with a colored ball, maybe a pink or red. White balls become very hard to find in the trees. Also, be aware that the fairways and greens are very hard. Hit it short and let it roll onto the green when possible. And be aware with tee shots that the ball may run out much further than you are used to. What looks like a perfect shot in the fairway may very well run out and into the...
Read moreI tried to play this course in late June despite the recent reviews of a hole closure and poor green quality (which has not changed) and had a thunderstorm roll in while on the driving range. No big deal, rain happens. The computer was down in the clubhouse so they made a note to issue a raincheck once the computer was back up. Fast forward one month (not common for me to be back in less than a year). I did not schedule a tee time (my mistake). A small tournament was starting which may or may not have had teams on every hole. From the number of vehicles in the parking lot I highly doubt it. They would not let my pair play because of the tournament. Would not give a refund from the prior raincheck and would not even issue an official raincheck. I am upset by the lack of customer service with no attempt to remedy the issue. They had a “better luck next time” attitude. I will not be returning to make a 3rd attempt to play...
