Prospector's Paradise — Local services in Calumet Township

Giving this place two stars just to acknowledge that it’s interesting to walk through. They have a lot of geodes that are large and pretty to look at. They also have some interesting displays of copper. And, the place is just kind of campy and funny the way it’s cobbled together. Honestly, my favorite thing there was the friendly dog that laid on the floor and let me pet him. Having said all that, if you have any interest in buying any rocks of any kind, this would not be a place to buy. It’s almost like they really don’t want to sell their stuff because they’re pricing it 2 to 3 to 10 times what you would pay anywhere else. Example, they’ve got a table displaying a number of polished rock spheres for ridiculous prices starting at $100 (tiny) and going up to like $700 (still not even all that big). I found a similar rock to one that they would be charging $200 for on Amazon for only 30 bucks. I guess they’ve been in business for quite some time and they know they will get enough tourists who pay these other worldly prices. I don’t know. Just know what you’re going for and you’ll be OK. I stopped in while visiting the keweenaw peninsula, overwhelmed with all of its glory. There was so much to see! Never been in a rock shop so filled! I met Alex's grandson and his wife, and when I asked where I could find copper locally, she let me take a picture of a map and told me which were the hot spots!! (You don't find that kind of helpfulness in Pennsylvania). I got a really cool rough fire agate specimen. I visited some of the mines she suggested and did not leave empty handed! I made a second trip, to meet the man himself, Alex and his wife. What a lovely couple. I brought him in a specimen I found and he put it on the lap machine and gave me so much info. After telling him i hadn't found any yooperlites, he let me pick one from a drawer! I showed him an odd piece I found from a mine and he showed me the piece he had and informed me on what I had found. I bought some beautiful polished gree stone from them that trip. Let me start by explaining that I am very well versed in minerals and their values. Right off the bat I noticed that most of the rocks outside were over priced. But if you are just going to put the rock In your rock garden I guess 5$-10$ is fine, but not for me. The inside displays were very cool. The upper floor copper room was very well done and a highlight of the place. To me, the variety just wasn’t there. They had a lot of copper, quartz varieties, calcite and some questionable Moroccan fossils (buy at your own risk!). The copper was expensive but if you are a tourist it is a fair price. You can find your own but then you have to acid bath it etc etc. Some of the clear coating on the copper were sloppy. Yooperlites overpriced but that’s just how they are everywhere.
