My brother recently moved to the Triangle from the Chicago area and needed furniture for his new house. He especially wanted the living room area to look striking and his existing furniture just didn't work. I suggested that the check out Hill Country Woodworks and consider some custom pieces. My wife and I had bought pieces from them some 30 years ago that we still enjoy.
My brother had already looked at the usual places -- along Glenwood Ave in Raleigh and at outlets like Rooms to Go. Some stuff looked nice but didn't seem very well made. Good quality pieces made from solid woods were notably absent. So, he agreed to check out Hill Country.
The floor plan of his house is tricky and he wasn't sure that standard size pieces, like a sofa and coffee table would work. So custom options were appealing.
Mark at Hill Country came to my brother's place and took photos of the room and used them to make up a digital image of how various pieces would look in his room. This was extremely helpful, as were Mark's suggestions for pieces.
My brother decided on two love seats with accompanying coffee tables that would be placed at angles with a trapezoidal end table between them. Mark used a CAD/CAM program to show how the pieces would look in the room (all to scale).
My brother also wanted a long table for against a wall and wanted it to be a focal point. Mark showed us a gorgeous piece of curly maple with a natural edge that he thought would be really striking for the table. He also suggested that custom cabinetry could be added to the design to provide storage space for wine, etc. He worked up several variations of the design on the computer to help with visualization.
This week, all of the tables arrived -- ahead of schedule. They're absolutely beautiful as well as highly functional. The love seats are waiting for the seamstress to complete the cushions but should arrive soon.
Even without the seating, the room has been transformed. The long table is exquisite and is the room's defining feature. The wood (maple and walnut) are exquisite and the finish and craftsmanship are absolutely perfect.
The entire process was a joy, with helpful suggestions when ever needed. These craftspeople take great pride in their work. The service and final product are impeccable.
If you are looking for really fine, heirloom-quality wooden furniture with contemporary styling cues, we strongly recommend Hill Country. The whole process was a pleasure and the furniture will be a source of pleasure for...
Read moreWe approached Mark at Hill Country Woodworks to design a bed and side tables for us out of natural wood, leaving the rough edge as a border for the headboard and side tables. We could not be more pleased with the results!! They listened to our desires and ideas and were wonderful with helping us to understand the intricacies of the project and allowed us to choose the planks of the tree which would be seen on the head and foot boards. We are so excited with the end results!! The finish is as smooth as silk. Thank you Mark and Will for all you did to make our bed so beautiful!!

Read moreSix years ago Hill Country built a very special table for me that I use as a desk. It has a 4 x 6 foot solid top of 2 inch cherry lumber and a wide drawer on excellent heavy duty drawer rollers for office supplies. They really listened and what they made is exactly what was in my mind. I love it and use it daily. The attention to detail and quality is wonderful. It's what I wanted and knew I could never get. We forget how "a thing of beauty is a joy forever". Six years later it still brings me...
