My family has been going to the Washington County Fair for years and I can say with all honesty that it one of the finest agricultural fairs that I've been to. The grounds are excellent and the barns are spacious, clean and well lit.
The livestock exhibits are the focus here, and without fail they are always impressive. The animals are exceptionally well cared for and well groomed, but the highlight are the exhibitors themselves. I'd wager that you will not meet a more personable and friendly group of farm folk anywhere. Most families have an area in the barn alongside their animals and almost all are happy to tell you about the animals and let you get up close and personal if you only take a moment to ask.
As for the other county fair staples; The Washington County Fair of course offers lots of food and Midway games and a decent amount of rides. However this is where the fair slightly lacks. Almost all the food is excellent, but there does seem to be a repetitiveness to what is on offer
The same goes for the games. There's a number of games booths, but not a large variety, and while it's easy to win a small prize it's often not clear what it takes to win a medium or large prize. Thus should one want to win something larger it can easily get expensive. Add to that the fact that the stereotype of the fast talking carney looking to scam rubes out of their money is still alive and well and one would be advised to keep to a budget when playing the games of chance.
All in all, the Washington County Fair is an absolutely wonderful event for people of all ages. Check the flyer times for the demolition derbies, tractor pulls and musical entertainment to add to your night and get there early or be prepared for a moderate walk through rutted fields to get...
Read moreIt's always fun to go see all of the animals there. We always park at the trolley museum and then rice and trolley over to the fairgrounds. My only complaint about that parking area is the fact that it's not well; lighted. So it's really dark when you are walking back to your car at night. Practically pitch black in places. And i hope the admission tickets both and the various food and beverage vendors will finally start accepting more payment options than just cash someday. They can at least start accepting credit cards. That would be nice. And then maybe they can even start accepting contactless payment methods like Google Pay, Apple Pay, etc. I would love to be able to pay for my milkshake and funnel cake by simply t tapping my phone to a compatible payment point. For as much money as they charge for everything there, i would like to think that they can afford to go more modern. My cup of lemonade was $7, and my funnel cake was $10. I'm not sure if each of those figures is correct, but my total for both was definitely $17. At least they were both really, really good. The hot sausage sandwich with peppers and onions was also really good. And i really enjoyed my milkshake, too. I loved walking through all of the different animal barns. The sheep...
Read moreI only went to see my 3 year old granddaughter in her first cheer exhibition. My mother and I each paid $10 to get in, just to sit on blistering hot bleachers at the main "Grand Stand" and watch a 2 minute routine. All the little girls looked so cute, but this grand stand stage looked like a dirty flatbed truck. They could have at least put some skirting around the bottom. But, worst of all, my 72 year old mother was having trouble breathing and felt faint from the heat while walking up the main thoroughfare to return to the car so I kindly asked a security guard if he could call one of the golf carts that I saw whizzing around to help her, and he told me that she could catch one up at the gate, dismissed my concerns, and walked away... That was at the top of the hill!!! How was that supposed to help her when she needed it. Thankfully, some nice carnival workers had some chairs in the shade outside their camper that she could rest on while I got her some cold water....
