One of the best trails to see volcanic traces in the park! The trail took 3 hours for us from the parking lot. It's worth noting that the short part of the road before parking lot is a dirt road. When the wether is good, it's easy to ride there even in a sedan like Prius or others. I'm not sure about other times. Additionally. this trail is located pretty far from the main entrance to the park. It takes around 1.5 hours to reach the main park entrance from here. We made this hike from Chester on the second day of our trip to Lassen Park. The decent part of the trail is flat and goes through the forest and the fields with flowers. We saw one small snake close to a creek and a pair of deers in the forest. The volcanic zone itself is located right at the end of the trail ( around 1.5 hours). It's a short loop around the fumaroles, the mud potes and other spots of the volcanic activity. The trail there is pretty safe and has some fence to prevent interventions to the most dangerous areas. The only fly in the ointment during the perfect trail was a lot of horse droppings all over the path. Just need to be careful not to put foot in it. It's good that there is a horse riding, but leaving all the products of life on the road it's kind of nasty and disrespectful towards the...
Read moreAs of 9/1/24 you can park at the Boiling Springs trailhead. Then either take that trailhead or walk a mile on the road to the Devil's kitchen trailhead. I recommend the latter as there is a major creek that's missing a crossing after the fire if you take the Boiling Springs trail.
The walk through the valley is gorgeous. The walk in the forest is more uphill and the forest is devastated by the Dixie fire so it's not very nice looking and there's no shade. The bridge at the end is partially rotted out. There's a makeshift beam put in to make it passable, but not sure how long that will last. The trail is definitely in need of repairs and maintenance. Devil's kitchen is a worthwhile destination still despite the...
Read moreAn absolute gem in California. Could not ask for a better place to hike. It was a nice in and out trail. I can't wait to go back and explore some of the off shoots of the Devil's Kitchen trail for even more fun experiences. Please make sure you respect nature and stay on the trails. This not only helps preserve it, but in some places it could be...
