I only recently discovered this place and look forward to becoming a regular customer. They have very affordable produce and food items, and the man running it is very sweet. He told me he has lived in Clairton for seven decades, and that he loves being able to bring fruits and vegetables to the residents of Clairton — an area that has been a food desert for decades.
The comments disparaging this place are very disappointing. Many people can’t afford fresh produce at grocery stores as it is, especially those in poorer areas around here (case in point: I live near McKeesport and a Shop ‘N Save location that sells limes for a whopping 80 cents apiece). Grant money given to operate this place I assume largely goes towards the overhead that comes with operating a storefront, even one that operates as a nonprofit providing low-cost groceries — and even if the items are largely donated.
I hate to break it to some of you, but you can thank capitalism and decades of disinvestment for the reason why Clairton doesn’t have an Aldi or Giant Eagle. Some of you need to be more appreciative of this place and the positive difference they’re trying to make in your community.
