Speckled Hen is owned by one of the nicest, most appreciative, and humble business owner’s I’ve ever come across. We’ve seen Val go from a tiny operation to having a full crew working overtime making chocolate for all occasions. It’s hands down the best milk chocolate I’ve ever had, period. The only close comparison to her milk chocolate is Sarris, which everyone loves in Pittsburgh. They commercially produce their chocolate so you lose the friendly personal experience you get when you walk into Speckled Hen.
What Sarris won’t do is make anything you want, whenever you want. My mom can’t have milk or dark chocolate now, but can have white chocolate. As a kid she used to love mallow cups, and guess what? Val made white chocolate mallow cups for her!
My grandmother turned 101 and she loved chocolate covered marshmallows. Val made a cute arrangement for her and even cut the marshmallows in half to keep the price down since we wanted 101 pieces of chocolate.
Val also does very creative and fun parties in her party room for kids that obviously combine chocolate with crafts. It was probably my daughter’s favorite birthday party ever.
What’s not up for debate at all is the fact that Speckled Hen has the best peanut butter cups on the planet! How do I know? My family and friends voted and the peanut butter mixture is creamy, not dry and gritty and the milk chocolate to peanut butter ratio is perfect. I took my best shot at cutting one in half to show the texture.
If you want the best chocolate, take a ride to Speckled Hen in Saxonburg, PA, and support this awesome small business, then say hello to Val for me because I don’t get out there as much as I used to.
2025 Update - we moved 40 minutes away, but still drive well out of our way to continue to go back to Speckled Hen. Lucky for me a girl I work with lives in Saxonburg and will bring me chocolate here and there as a treat. When we do get Speckled Hen at home it gets hidden immediately because if you leave it out in the open, it disappears immediately. Val and her team continue to blow us away! Val, if you see this, the peanut butter cruncher is out of this world! You already made the best chocolate and peanut butter combination but to make it better? I didn’t think it was possible...
Read moreMy husband and I stopped here for the first time the Friday before Easter to pick up a few things before traveling to visit family. No doubt this was likely one of their busiest days of the year as they opened at 10AM and the parking lot was packed when we arrived at 10:45AM.
This is a lovely chocolate shop! The items are well marked with prices, and everything was organized and very clean. There was one woman working the check-out counter dealing with a long line of customers, hopping over to the fudge counter to cut fudge for orders, and helping customers with special requests. And she did it all in such a pleasant manner and with a genuine smile on her face. She even offered to wrap the chocolate boxes with a bow to add a special touch to Easter baskets.
What a fabulous atmosphere and a fun experience. The small piece of peanut butter melt away fudge I managed to eat before it was devoured by family was delicious! Will definitely be back again for...
