I only took a star away because I ended up driving on a road more challenging and more beautiful scenic wise. I took Rodney (My Crv) up this road from spring Creek. Just because I took him up this pass doesn't mean you can. I am sure everything I've done was off the skin of my teeth.
Leaving Silver Creek there is a sign that says (Entering remote area, EMS response may be limited. No services 'water, food and fuel. Be wildlife aware). This road will eventually bring you to a junction to go towards Animas Forms which is the safest way off the mountain.
Cinnamon Pass requires a high clearance vehicle at a minimum. This year was really bad (2023) and I somehow managed to get Rodney to the summit and he is bone stock with no modifications. I only installed one size bigger tires over the factory tires.
This was a great drive with just a few big obstacles for a vehicle like Rodney. I expect anything with 9inches of ground clearance or more with 4wd will make this pass feel like you're in a safari.
• Always remember to get fuel/food/water before getting out here. • If you have a breakdown, you could be out there for a very long time so make sure you have survival items and at least a first aid kit. Enjoy yourself and be mindful of your approach/departure angles in...
Read more@sondra Brown- totally agree. We took Tahoe from Silverton and road initially was typical gravel road with some bumps- then turned into absolute off- road, 4 wheel drive with lift and significant clearance is needed. There were some spots that I had to get out and put rocks in places to drive over to lift truck so it would make it. I drove 3-4 Mph entire way!!!
Took us hours to get to Handies Peak. On our way out we took road towards lake city - it was better but still had spots where you had to navigate huge rocks and drop offs. It did get much better where I could get up to 35mph but that was after 10-11 miles of 4-5mph!!
Passing another car either was was very precarious or impossible in many spots.
I recommend smaller frame vehicle like jeep with 4 wheel drive and good ground clearance. My 2022 Tahoe did not have enough clearance and would have benefited from off road tires vs highway tires I had. Many of the vehicles we did pass were off road motorcycles or RZRs .
Scenery is beautiful but hard to enjoy when you are worried about items listed above.
Btw- anyone saving this is easy road I would question what they were driving and how far/ what direction they came in on...
Read moreThe most afraid I have ever been. We did this in 1986. (I bet the road has worn away more since then. We were on vacation & we asked a park official that was near the entrance if we could do it in our suburban. He said oh sure. It was 4:00pm. We thought we had plenty of time, since it was only a little over 20 miles long. It was so narrow with drop offs so scarry- I thought we were going to die. At one point my husband said our back tire was almost off the road as we made a turn. With 4 children in the car. It was terrifying. At dark we made it to the top, but we were not even on the road, my husband had to get out with a flashlight and get us down the ruts in the rocks. I would only recommend this to serious 4 wheelers that are very small, like a little jeep. It took till after midnight to find our way back to...
