My husband and I often like to thrift travel shop and find inexpensive plane travel to exotic places which leaves room in our travel budget to splurge on other things. This was one of the things we splurged on in Puerto Rico, however once we did the tour we both agreed that it can't even be considered a splurge as this tour really delivers on value for your money. Stephen was our tour guide and was a fantastic communicator. Everything from working with us to help us reschedule when our originally scheduled date didn't meet their minimum participant requirements to making sure we could be picked up right at our AirBNB. He also is a lot of fun and made the tour so interesting and funny. He picked us and the other two parties up and took us out to the hot springs where he shared some wonderful quenepas with us and we were able to just relax for an hour. Then we headed to a great little town where we were able to have some delicious tacos, chat with our new friends from the tour, and walk around and do a bit of shopping. From there we got on the boat with the amazing Captain Frank and headed out to a little spot for swimming at sunset. This was so beautiful we would have felt we'd gotten our money's worth already. BUT the best was yet to come! Just as it got dark, we traveled into one of three bioluminescent bays on the island - the only one in which you can swim - and got in the water for one of the most unique and rewarding experiences we have ever had. If you have the chance to do this tour DO NOT pass it up!

My husband and I did the Bioluminecent Bay and Hot Spring Tour. We were picked up at a plaza near our hotel. The van was spacious and clean. There were 9 people in our tour group. It took about 1.5 hours to drive to the hot springs. The hot springs had 2 pools. We had an hour to enjoy them, which was more than enough. Then, we had a 1.5 hour drive to dinner. We had an hour to eat and explore the small area surrounding the restaurant. Borikua Tours provided 3 tacos and drinks for dinner. My husband and I both chose the fried fish tacos, which were tasty. After dinner, we boarded 2 boats and rode to a sandbar. We spent about 45 minutes swimming at the sandbar and saw a few types of fish in the water. After dark, we headed to the bioluminescent bay and were not disappointed! The glow created with movement was magical. We spent about 30 minutes in the water. We could’ve stayed longer, but a few people were stung by jellyfish (we were told it’s uncommon for jellyfish to be in the bay). The crew were prepared and promptly took care of those who were stung, including my husband. The pain from the sting improved after 4 hours and disappeared after a day. Finally, we drove 2 hours back to San Juan. It was a long day and our guide, Steven, did a good job keeping us on track. It was a lot of driving, but 100% worth it to be able to swim in the bioluminescent bay.

We had a pretty terrible experience- not totally due to Borikua Tour and the guide, but they certainly did not help. We booked a 9 hour tour from San Juan to the hot springs and La Parguera bioluminescent bay. The hot springs were closed (and had been for over 24 hours), so we drove about an hour and a half to find that out. So we started for the bay and stopped at a gas station to kill time. We drove about 2 more hours and arrive at the restaurant for dinner. We were served pretty mediocre tacos, pretty dry, no sauces or sides. It then started storming with quite a bit of lightening. The radar was pretty clear that the storm would be sticking around for a couple hours. The guide just kept saying “it was out of his hands,” he was talking to “his boss” and the boat captain. Most the time, the guide was just sitting there on his phone with headphones in. We waited nearly 3 hours before they called it and drove us back to San Juan. It was poor decision making, poor communication, and a disappointing experience- some of which was in their control. We were refunded $375 out of $500. I would NOT recommend this company. They don’t adapt or compromise well at all. Of the whole 9 hour tour, the only cool thing we saw was some tarpon fish at the dock (see photo).

Bioluminescence TourAug 2023This was overall a wonderful trip. Steven, our tour guide, made it an unforgettable day. The tour company made sure they didn't have too many people booked which I was worried about. Steven called and the night before reminding me what we needed to bring and where we needed to be at what time. Then again texted an hour before arriving to give us a heads up. (loved that) The transportation was really nice! Cool and roomy the hot springs were nothing spectacular but they were a perfect activity for a halfway point. I loved the views and some of the flowers. They had snacks and drinks too. Then off for the rest of the journey. We learned a lot about the island and its history which I loved. When we got to the little bayside area to eat before heading out they fed us at a local dinner spot with the best tacos. We had the fish tacos which I highly recommend. After 3 tacos and drink we were happy and off to the boat. Unfortunately, it started to rain but everyone was scared to say anything for fear they would cancel. I loved how Steven and the Captains could read us and knew we wanted to go ahead if we could so off we went. They let us swim while the sun set which was absolutely beautiful. We kept seeing lighting off in the distance and hoped it would stay there but by the time we got to the place to swim at nightfall it was raining really hard and the lighting was really close. We only had a few minutes in the water and to be honest we only saw the bioluminescent very faintly but I did see it. Do I wish I saw more? Yes I do but Mother Nature had other plans that night. Borkua Tours and Steven did everything to their power to make sure we were happy. Pros: Read AboveCons: Men's bathroom isn't remodeled yet (in the process) so my suggestion would be have your husband dress with you in the women's room or wait for the woman to be done if the men's room isn't done when...

We had such a great time on our tour with Robert. The day started with a timely pickup at our AirBnB in a clean, comfortable SUV and a ride out to the caves. It was wonderful to get out of the city and see some of the countryside. Once we arrived at the location we were greeted by the wonderful welcoming committee of tour dogs which were our "guides" for the day. Robert provided our supplies and safety equipment and we set out on our hike. We experienced 4 different caves and all while hiking through the beautiful sub-tropical forests. Robert had us totally at ease with our safety and taught us so much about the caves, area around it and animals (bats, lizards, snakes, frogs, birds, insects) that we came across throughout the day. I have a slight fear of heights/tight spaces, but was able to enjoy the trip with some thrills along the way. After our caving tour we drove back towards San Juan and stopped at this AMAZING local spot for lunch. Seriously...so good. Robert picked a little bit of everything for us to try and it was some of the best food we had out whole trip (and we had great food before/after).

Highlights: Beautiful caves Awesome/knowledgeable tour guide Fantastic tour dogs - it was so fun to watch them navigate the hike and caves (better than humans of course) AMAZING FOOD.

I was saddened to hear from Robert of the decrease in tourism they are experiencing after Hurricane Maria and now the earthquake. We honestly felt very safe and had everything we needed. Go to Puerto Rico and go on some tours! Experience what this beautiful place has to offer with those who know best.

Thank you...
