first off let me say this is a very fun thing to do with the family. i booked a 8 min session at kentucky speedway. took my wife and 3 year old son along with me. we got there early and walked around and checked out some cars in the garage and took pictures. that was the best thing about it. just being at the track for a few hours looking around.
they do not have any venders for the event. so bring your own food and drinks. i got checked in and received a drivers suit and a pager. if your and experienced driver and want to wear gloves or racing shoes you must bring your own.
after check in we went to a classroom for a safety video and instructions on what to do on the track. the staff were all friendly and in good moods. i liked that alot. after the classroom we went back outside to pitroad where you have a final drivers meeting and get ready to drive.
now you gotta wait for your pager to go off to report to the box to get fitted for a helmet and earbuds. i guess they go by alphabetical order from your last name. thats the only thing i can figure. well i ended up being the very last driver to get in the car lol. no big deal someone had to go last right? it was about a 2 hour wait. so we hung out and took pics and watched others as they drove.
so finally i get the buzz on the pager to report for my turn. earbuds and helmet on and im ready to go. up to this point i had no problems at all and was having a great day. once you get in the car and the spotter starts telling you what to do i started having a few problems. spotter pretty much bitched at me the whole time for going to fast. said keep the car at 4000rpm. i did so. turns out the tach in the car was way off and i was going to fast. i backed it all the way down to 3400rpm before he would stop whining. was about 3 laps in before he would let me go any faster. he started to increase me by 200 rpm a lap. after the 4th or 5th lap i had enough with him bitching and just starting going. after all thats what i paid to do right? go fast? he bitched some more for 2 laps and said my session was over.
it was still a blast to drive the car. even if it was only a 350 crate engine in it. i enjoyed it but its more for people who have never been in a race car or raced before. for people who have never strapped into a race car before this would be a hoot. but for anyone with a racing background will not be happy with the 5000rpm limiter. and then having the spotter hold you at 4000rpm to start. by the time you get up to 5000rpm the 8 min session is over and you only got a lap while up to speed. you spend more time looking at the tach trying not to piss off the grumpy spotter who has been up there all day in the heat dealing with people. i was last to go out. so they were all ready to head back to the hotel for the day lol.
if you want to have fun and spend some time at the track and get to cruise around the track a few times in a car. this is awsome. i really did have alot of fun. just wanted the actually make a few laps and not get my time cut short because of their own equipment isnt working right. so dont show up thinking they are gunna cut you loose in a nascar for 8 mins because thats not whats gunna happen.
its fun but is it worth the money? i say no its not. cost just under $400 for the 8 min session that you get limited to 4000rpm in a nascar with a 350 crate engine lol.
if you want to just have fun at the track and your not worried about how fast the car goes? then its a blast!! the staff where awsome and friendly. execpt the spotter lol. he gets alittle testy if your going to fast lol. really cool to walk around the garage area also. im currently looking into options for racing experience where they let you run the car alittle. not just cruise around the track bouncing off the chip. if anyone knows of a racing experience like that please let me know. thanks and have...

We went to the Charlotte Motor Speedway yesterday for my husband to do the Checkered Flag Experience for our anniversary.
We arrived as instructed yesterday at 1120 for check-in for our 1200 reservation. We were promptly greeted and my husband was checked in, suited, photographed and sold the “better package” which includes complete video of his three sessions, a plaque, a shirt and hat. It was fair in my opinion. We didn’t have to wait long before we were in a room with the instructor Drake. The informative session was really well done. He kept good time too. Shortly after everything was wrapped up we were taken to the track.
Once we were at the track we saw that there was a rather large company function of at least 30 people waiting around to drive. My husband didn’t get to a car for 2 hours! In my opinion this was very poor time management on NASCAR’s part. Our reservation time should have been later due to the rather large group ahead of us. We just sat on the side in sweltering heat waiting with no fans or fresh cold water. This was miserable and disappointing. Even made me kinda sick from being so hot.
However, my husband thoroughly his driving experience. He topped out at 156 mph and did really really well! His spotter was great and told my husband how maximize his speed without hitting the governor. He really helped to make my husband’s performance and experience the best. Definitely worth the money for the Checkered Flag Experience as he wound up having a total of 24 laps. We got phenomenal footage of his drive which was totally worth the extra money. Checkout afterwards was quick and easy too.
I do also want to note that everyone was very friendly and helpful. Staff was on par.
You should know how to drive a manual transmission too! My husband has plenty of experience with our Corvette, so it was super easy for him. Plus there are only 4 gears! You’re in 4th gear by the time you exit the pit. However, there were a few poor guys that could barely get the car out of the pit because they couldn’t drive manual transmission. This holds everything up for everyone. Not fun.
Now if NASCAR could learn better time management skills, that would be great! Even offer cold refreshments to those who have to wait extremely long periods due to their lack of time...
