Played this for the first time yesterday. A very good weekend twilight deal for a quality course with several interesting and pretty golf holes.
The front nine is forgiving off the tee; the back nine a little less so, though I still felt comfortable hitting driver on most holes. Typically, one side of the fairway would have a hazard or hilly waste area, while the other side would be open. Get too far off the fairway and you're likely to be facing a sidehill lie. Some holes have waterless rock-lined ditches crossing the fairway in the landing zone. I hit into a couple of them and the ball just caromed out. It's hard to see these from the tees.
I found that it was easy to miss greens to the wrong side, leaving difficult up-and-downs. That's part of playing a course for the first time. Neither myself nor my playing partner had much luck reading the greens once on them. It's not that they were unfair, just subtle and a little quick.
I also liked that it was a fair layout. We played the orange tees (6,320 yards), and there were no long forced carries required. Firm fairways gave an extra 20-30 yards of roll, and most greens allowed for approaches to run up. It played shorter than the yardage.
Cross Creek is about an hour and a half from me, but I'll make the drive back here...
Read moreGreens were horrible. I’ve golfed in a lot of places and for $60 it’s waaay overpriced for what it is.
Regarding their staff, right off the bat they thought one of my guests I was golfing with was trying not to pay for the round. What occurred was he thought I had paid for him and he walked away. This freaked them out and I explained that he would pay, not to worry. I don’t know what kind of customers they get often here, but I find it weird that the staff’s first thought was that he was trying to sneak a free round.
After the last hole, the starter went out of his way to look for us to tell us that we took way too long despite us being some of the only people playing the entire course. He talked to us like teenagers in trouble even though we’re in out 40’s. We had a brand new player with us, but we were always mindful and in-etiquette. Never had someone waiting on us.
I was already feeling like it wasn’t really worth it but after the starter came to us with a rude and condescending attitude I decided to write a review. Hopefully they get their staff some lessons in how to talk to customers and more importantly learn to take care of...
Read moreWe are visitors to the area. The course is interesting, challanging and in good condition. We played 18 holes in a twosome. The first 9 were fairly slow, but, we thought when we turned to 10 we would be able to pick up speed as the guys in front of us were only playing 9. We did not want to play fast we just dont like waiting 10 minutes to start each hole. On 10 we came right up on a foursome. One of the men very aggressively announced to us "Well, you're going to have to slow down. We just let one group through and we're not going to let any more!" We had not said anything to provoke such an outburst nor did we respond. We followed behind them the rest of the way. I don't hold the course owners responsible for their poor behavior. I do hold the starter responsible for putting people right in front of us on 10. Also, it is hilly in places so mixing walkers with carts slows play. We play in the desert and marshall's keep play moving. I hope this information helps as you really do have a gem...
