I have heard about the Grocery Clearance Center over the years, but it's pretty far from me. Someone brought up a similar place in Fort Worth, and so I decided to look it up. I was shocked at the pictures of what kind of food was available- so many of the things that I travel multiple places to get the best deal on, but still can't get "enough" of with how far my budget will stretch.
Going here was everything I thought it would be and more. I have three rapidly growing boys, on a very special diet due to their health issues, and it seems like there is just more month than money when it comes to groceries- but no more!
I'll be visiting regularly- even with the drive, and I've already told my friends and family about this place and have invited them to come with me in the future!
A few things to note, that I learned as I shopped today- Don't take your cart in the freezer, it isn't allowed as it is truly packed to the brim with all sorts of amazing produce, dairy, and meat deals, and it just isn't possible to move around. If you have little ones, it would be best to bring someone with you that can help, so that you can go in and out of the freezer cartless, without wondering if all your littles are behaving.
Also, some things aren't priced- although it's very little- don't be worried to put it in your cart- it's no doubt affordable.
I walked out with TONS of food that I wouldn't normally be able to purchase for my littles ones- at minimum it would have cost me $400, and trips to multiple stores (I typically go to at least 3 stores a week, sometimes 4) to make sure I got the best price and the best ingredients, and there would have been many sacrifices. My total bill here? Under $150.
The aisles are narrow, and there is a lot to see- don't miss a single aisle, because while much of it is well organized into categories, you never know which aisle might contain an out of place score of an item that you really love.
I believe I met the owner while I was there, although I didn't hear his name, I've read in reviews that he regularly walks around welcoming his customers, and we were one of the many who were welcomed today. Very kind and helpful!
Some of my most exciting scores today were: Izzio Sourdough bread, Organic Raw Cheddar Shredded Cheese, Organic berries by the case, Siete Chips, Organic Peanut Butter in a glass jar, Perfect Bars by the case, and Jovial Gluten Free...
Read moreMy parents are (slightly) obsessed with this place: they watch the owner's videos and go every other week. They seem to come back with a lot of interesting things at a decent price! I decided to start coming with them a few months ago, and have been pretty impressed with the experience each time. The employees are friendly and helpful and, when the owner is out on the floor, he is charismatic and kind. Though it may be small, it's packed and well-organized by item type. I like to go there to find items that I generally would never purchase due to their price tags in the big box stores (i.e., unique foods, health items, beauty products, etc.). In this economy, with the way things continually inflate, it's getting hard to maintain a low grocery bill. Stores like this one are a great place to keep in your arsenal for saving where you can on your day-to-day -- and fun items you normally wouldn't consider! I've had the chance to try a lot of cool products like peppercorn feta, blue lavender milk, gluten free pastas, alternative milks and flours, and so much more! The deep discounts are largely from being overstock items that are a few months expired or close to being expired. I recommend reading up on the concept of expiration dates in the food industry, to get an understanding of why these things are "allowed" to be sold past the date printed. Food product dating really has nothing to do with safety, but rather when the item will no longer be at its peak quality. Manufacturers actually tend to be conservative with their dates, and we know some items can last virtually forever!
As some other reviewers have noted, sometimes, the prices aren't better than their sales prices at the big box stores, so it can be hit or miss on some things. The only problem I've personally had, with my last two visits, are items purchased being left out of my bags. It's too far away for me to go back and amend the issue, so I've just considered it a loss (the first time, the item was so inexpensive it didn't matter; this second time, it was a more expensive/anticipated health food item... I'll have to be more conscientious going forward).
All in all, I highly recommend that you check them out! Definitely worth the drive in traffic every time, and even if I go in mind to just browse/buy an item or two, I always leave...
Read moreThere is something for everyone featured in this store. But if you are VEGETARIAN, VEGAN, or PESCATARIAN and on a tight budget, SHOP HERE FIRST!!!
Seniors get a $1 discount on every $10 spent (the maximum is $5 per total purchase) every Tuesday.
The store is always neat and clean but the organization of the items is somewhat baffling. For example, typically in stores "like items" are grouped on one aisle (not counting special displays and end caps). But if you stroll the aisles of the Grocery Clearance Center you will see groups of items repeated somewhat randomly throughout the store.
That said the pricing is variable in comparison to most stores. Some items are deeply discounted, some are slightly discounted, some show no discount, and some are priced to sell at a higher price than other stores. However, all the items I examined were in good shape and could be placed in your pantry for a long-term storage (unlike many you find at Walmart and pay full price for).
I was able to purchase large bags of fresh Mustard greens (pre-washed and sliced)for $1 each; Annie's vegetarian pizzas for $3.99; and a large variety of Manuka honey and spices. There were lots of fresh veggies in the cooler at an excellent price! And there is always a wide variety of cheese.
But I would be remiss if I didn't bring up "use and "best by" dates. You have to be mindful to check them before you put the items in your basket. The worst date I found was an item in the freezer section dated June 2022. That date was just a little bit too long ago for me to consider purchasing.
Finally, be very careful on the parking lot because it's full of moon craters. It needs resurfacing in a very bad way. This limits not only where and how you drive but also poses limits on...
