A very moving experience, one can feel the spirit at the site and it’s not easily forgotten. This is a historical event without any satisfactory explanations. One one hand there are the Arkansas travelers who likely were anti-Mormon to begin with and then you have the Latter-Day Saints who had suffered the massacre at Hawns Mill. It has been said that some who were with the wagon train were Missourians who had a hand in driving the Saints from Missouri under Gov. Wilburn Boggs federally sanctioned extermination order. Tails of poisoned water supplies and dead livestock followed the caravan. My personal belief is that knowing the cavalry was headed their way and then the additional appearance of the wagon train, fear and tension was probably rampant. There was likely harsh language, including threats of giving the Mormons more of the same old familiar treatment they had endured over and over in the East, likely lite the fuse. One thing is for sure, regardless of which side you favor, it was a tragic event that shouldn’t have happened, and we’ll never know the full truth of...

However, Will Bagley wrote the excellent Blood of the Prophets, which is in my opinion the best book out there on the history of what happened at Mountain Meadows. The site has a lot of history, and there are some plaques throughout the site that explain what took place here. However, the road is well maintained. The site itself is beautiful. It is quiet, and the desert sun looks down on a grassy meadow, a trickling brook, and juniper and sage fill the air with their fragrance. It is heartbreaking that this beautiful site was where so much carnage took place under the sun. The original cross put on the site had a Bible verse on it: Vengeance is mine; I will repay,...
