Hotel/resort: Nice clean rooms, good amenities. Freezing cold air conditioning, goodness gracious! Hotel supplies plenty of little soaps and shampoos etc in rooms, which are from bath and bodyworks, just a nice little plus. Indoor pool is small, but has a cute little hot tub. Larger outdoor pool. Small arcade/game room with vending machines. Something for the kids to do. Sweet little gift shop with the most phenomenal cashier ever, the older gentleman that runs it is so very helpful and nice. Best customer service in the place. The sit down restaurant on site is slow and somewhat expensive, but decent food. We recommend the meat loaf, and the Cajun pasta for sure. The cafe is good, and much faster, but the casher/barista was cranky during our 4 day stay- and who's to blame her? Both food service areas were way understaffed. The resort is far from anywhere else to eat, so consider packing some food along with you. Overall, would stay again.
A note about the park: The resort sits in Canaan Valley State Park, and has many trailheads on the property. We did all of them, and greatly enjoyed this part of our trip. The website really fails to highlight the beautiful natural setting the resort is in, possibly because most people stay to golf during warmer months. There is so much lush diversity, and none of the trails were steeply graded, or unmanaged. Very easy hiking for this Colorado native! If you want a beautiful shorter trail, Deer Run is what I would recommend. The trail begins out behind the resort, fairly close to the pool. Deep forest with tons of understory plant life, and many little frogs and snails to watch. Just put on some bug spray first, and the flies will leave you alone. Monarch trail provides many photo opportunities with its abundance of butterflies and caterpillars. Neat...
Read moreI have rated Canaan Valley Resort a 2 star rating for the following reasons. 1. My family rented one of their cabins. While it was perfectly fine for size their website never mentioned their cabins DO NOT HAVE AC!! Being that it was July and very warm the one ceiling fan they had in the cabin only had one speed. Yes I did call the front desk and actually went up to the lodge and spoke to them in person. They sent a man to look at the fan and all he did was kept pulling the light switch chain and left. The lodge did not have additional fans. 2. Their restaurant at the lodge had a limited menu printed out on standard copy printer paper and in my opinion was over priced. No I'm not any type of cheap skate and I have no problem spending large amounts of money for a nice meal this was just not worth the price they charged. This is an unfortunate review and I have no Ill will against the staff I will just never return to this location again it was...
Read moreIn reality this is the only half decent golf course in this area. Is generally in good condition. Both greens and fairways were in good condition. It's fairly generous off the tee. There are a number of different teas so it can play to about any length you want. But it's not the most well-designed golf course. And being a resort course it is open to a lot of play by golfers who don't play very quickly. We were there on a Saturday in July and it took 5 hours. When we got to number 10 there were a total of four groups waiting to tee off. We played again the next day in a little over 4 hours. There was a beverage cart only on Sunday which made no sense to me. We only saw her twice and the drinks weren't cheap. Because there are elevation changes some design work could be done that would make this a much better...
