About 2007, I noticed some changes at the church down the street, and I discovered that an ingenious plan for solving many social problems all at once was in play: The church already had an outstanding program for feeding the homeless, and a community garden, and so someone put the chocolate and the peanut butter together and came up with the Fruitful Field where delicious organic food would be raised on it’s 7+ acres. Everyone from the homeless to local school kids to moms & dads would benefit! Local citizens learn organic gardening and reap the health and connectedness benefits from the Garden, and the homeless ministry got a new stream of healthy food. Not all community gardens survive but this one has thrived! Over 10 years, I’ve had the privilege to interact with super dedicated people like Wayne, Flavio, Pastor Jim, Miguel, and many others, And personally I’m here to attest that my life is much much better because the Fruitful Field team got behind the Garden and stuck with it and now it is a model for other community gardens to follow! May God continue to bless this fruitful field and all those who help...
