Beautiful river and wildlife- though as a Floridian, I feel as though it's important to mention that it's safe to assume most freshwater lakes or rivers can contain something that can possibly harm you, so it is important to take reasonable precautions. Aside from more obvious dangers like snakes/gators, there was a rare case of Naegleria Fowleri (also known as the "brain-eating amoeba") that occured in 2011, originating from this river, resulting in the untimely passing of a 16-year old girl named Courtney Nash (another case in 2016 was reported in Broward County, although the exact location is not specified in reports). This is a public service announcement to anyone reading to please remember to wear nose plugs when swimming in Florida freshwater, especially during the warmer months.
