I needed to stop by the nearest grocery/convenient store to grab a red and yellow onion before going to the house my family rented for the Fourth of July week. Inside the store I only saw yellow onions and decided to take a pic to let the family know there were no red onions so they’ll have to live without the red onion in the salsa. As I put the yellow onion on the register counter, the older cashier lady looked me up and down and told me the price for my one onion was double the price that was written on the sign (see pic). I respectfully told her the sign said $0.99 and not $2. She proceeded to tell me the reason why mine cost $2 was because it was bigger than the others (all the onions were roughly the same size). Also, I’m not sure how she would know that the onion I had selected was bigger than the others if she did not take mine to compare it with the others. Before I could get a word in, she said “I’m not going to argue with you, you’re not from here.” This was awkward and immediately, I noticed that I was the only person of color in this tiny establishment…I gave her my $1 and walked out.
