Alrighty another quick report this time from The Winds! Two days after Vitaliy and I did the Grand traverse in a day I drove East to The Wind River range to see if it really is as good as everyone kept saying, and turns out it is! After a third day of sitting around Big Sandy area waiting for weather to turn positive, I was feeling great again and ready for another big day so I set my alarm for 330 on Tuesday and went to bed a sunset. The hike in from the van was super mellow and almost entirely flat for about 8 ish miles to the start of Pingora. I was alone for this traverse so my bag was significantly heavier than usual due to needing a full 60m for rappels and 4L of water because there isn’t any on route. I also brought a pair of climbing shoes that I never put on, a few snacks, a jacket, and a few slings and nuts to be safe (which saved my life). All of this made the soloing a bit slow and cumbersome at first but by the time I hit Wolf’s Head I was feeling strong and confident and got moving. I had a significant hiccup on Sharks Nose due to poor route finding that I described in my last post but besides that the day went really well overall. Once you tag watchtower it’s 100% hiking and minimal scrambling so you can really turn your head off and just idle forward which is always fun. I try to keep my breaks as brief and minimal as possible and would rather slow my pace a bit to keep moving sustainably which is what I did here. I tagged War Bonnet peak which is the last summit right around 12 hours after leaving the van and began the absolute slog out. I was really strongly feeling the recent Grand Traverse on my legs and the huge descent and 8 mile hike out worked me pretty well. I got back to the van 14 hours 19 minutes after leaving and sat right in the chilly river in camp to thank my legs for another good day. Overall it was around 21 miles and 7000ft of gain and the climbing was absolutely fantastic, will for sure be coming back again soon! * I cut about 12 miles out of this video because it’s a relatively boring and flat straight line #windriverrange #windriver #cirqueofthetowers #alpineclimbing #rockclimbing #rockclimber #climbon #fatmaps #fatmap

Unlimited access to adventure and beauty like you’ve never seen. Some say the “winds” are better than Glacier National Park and even than the Alps. In our first day of hiking, we walked by 37 lakes! This range is unique in many ways, both geologic and scenic. Because of its size and variety, be sure to bring a variety of clothing. Some hikers have equipment packed in on mules and walk in with day packs without warm enough options… Also research the different sections of the Winds because some have more bears, and different types of bears (grizzlies, etc.)

As a 13 year old I was taken along with my 15 year old brother to an American Alpine Club retreat and exploration camp for three weeks near Island Lake near the Titcomb lakes. My father and about 20 other alpinist members were provided the services of a couple who cooked for us. We all camped on a short peninsula and us sons who had been included had the time of our lives! We caught huge trout for the cooks to serve us at supper. I remember being told stories by some quite illustrious climbers who were there while sitting around the camp after eating superb meals! We also joined them on several first ascents of previously unknown and unmapped peaks. My favorite went by the number F3. I still have a picture I had taken of the near vertical face of F3 from a trail across the valley when I took two of my own children there in 1970. I believe it has a real name by now. At 13, I was really impressed that we had made a first ascent and it required roping up and belaying each other on the...

I lived in Lander in 1988 and took every chance I could get to be up in the mountains. Not for the unprepared! You could end up a corpsicle really quick if you don't have proper gear and know what you're doing. Don't be a hero or you'll likely be a dead hero! If your prepared, the mountain views are stunning. And you won't breathe cleaner (thin) air . . . unless, of course,...
