I didn't think I could love cake more than I already do. Enter Matt Bumpas and his partner's passion for infusing their dessert with a true respect for the culinary science and art of great flavor. Every cake is an experience. And as such, everything they offer serves to honor and elevate the most exquisite occasion. Or let the cakes themselves make an occasion out of a regular day. After suffering with covid for my birthday, ordering a Sweet Bumpas cake was, for me, an act of self care. So I went for the Perisan Lust to make a belated birthday celebration feel decadent, and it did not dissappoint. I wish I were better at describing the details of why it works, but I can only promise that it was somehow both delicate and packed with flavor - a must try. This was actually my third Sweet Bumpas cake. The previous two were seasonal treats that made use of fresh ingredients, like peaches in summer and ginger for the holidays. I highly suggest you follow them to take advantage of these seasonal offerings, as well as their staples. Ordering is simple, and they provide clear instructions on how to best enjoy the cake and store any leftovers.
I must also add that their passion for great cakes doesn't end at what they create. Matt Bumpas has embraced this community as much behind the scenes as from within his own kitchen, encouraging and supporting other young bakers in the community to follow their own dreams. I feel so lucky to have them in our community, and their cake...
Read moreThe cakes made by Sweet Bumpas are the best cakes I have ever had, and that is no exaggeration. In college, I did birthday parties at a local museum and have tried many, many cakes. None of them can hold a candle to Matt's cakes. You can taste the high quality of the ingredients, skillfully combined to create a tasting experience that was completely new to me. I know it sounds like I am being dramatic, but I really love these cakes. We ordered 8 cakes from Sweet Bumpas for our wedding, and we loved the cakes and their ingredients so much, we printed out a separate cake menu for each guest so they could read over what was in each cake. Many people there tried more than one cake, just because they were all so good.
Additionally, working with Matt was a wonderful experience. Me and my wife met with him to do a cake testing before our wedding, and both his incredible cakes and charismatic personality drew us in. During the wedding planning process, communicating with Matt could not have been better. He was available when we had questions, and even took our calls on the weekends. All of the cakes were delivered to the wedding perfectly on time, and everyone loved his cakes!
If I could give Sweet Bumpas a higher rating, I would. They were great, and I would recommend them to anyone wanting a...
Read moreTo say that the cake was consumed by a hoard of food snobs would be an understatement. It was enthusiastically and utterly devoured, leaving only meager shadows of frosting and a rare crumb or two as evidence it ever even existed. Here’s a little more heft to the review, though… in case anyone is wondering: The “fancy” decoration was nothing short of visually stunning. Importantly, it augmented the total amount of frosting that we could go back and stick a greedy finger in to. Why would you want to put a finger in frosting? well, this frosting was well worth the cake faux pas. Normally, I fing commercial buttercreams to be lacking. Either cloyingly sweet or stiffly cardboard like with no flavor. This frosting couldn’t be further from those heinous things. It was creamy, had structure, had flavor and just belonged there. The cake body itself was luscious. It had body without being heavy, easy on the mouth without being overly wet. Last, best, but not least was the filling. The lemon curd was delightful. It was tart and fit in quite well with the strawberry filling: quite the marriage of flavors.
All in all, I highly recommend Matt and his cakes. They are little slices of sin...
