Super cool place to go to and explore. It's virtually completely abandoned, besides the active communication tower atop one of the old radar towers. Besides that though, all of the buildings are just left to rot. You can even climb up the other radar tower for an amazing view of the surrounding Keweenaw. On a clear day you can see Lake Superior on both sides from the very top. You can even spot Mt.Bohemia and Bete Grise. Just be mindful as some of the buildings are beginning to collapse, and the old radar tower has some holes in the floor on the upper stories. However, it is an amazing place to visit and certainly has a very interesting history.

Update: As of September 2021, the property has been acquired by a company with plans to restore the base and renovate it into a tourist destination. It is now private property and I would not advise...

I was stationed there from 1983 to 86. Having just previously spent 4 years stationed in Canada, I was used to harsh winters. Have to say, it was one of my more favorite assignment. The area had lots of things to do, and see. Prior to my arrival there, they had been in the process of deactivating the radar site. Apparently they had changed their mind, I was sent there to bring it back online. The only radar we had at the time was a mobile radar situated on the top of a flatbed trailer. Needless to say, the wind played havoc with it. We eventually brought it back online, but within a few short years they decided to close it for good. I want to make one comment about the street names they showing here. They are showing the western loop as Finland Drive, the name of that road was actually Superior Loop. That is the...

Ian, our tour guide, was an absolute wealth of knowledge. The tour encompassed base housing, operations and command and control. The highlight to me was the fallout shelter. It brought back memories of ICBM duty; the green paint, the musty smell and the escape hatch! The day we toured, it was very foggy and we couldn't see the Yooper scenery. However, the fog enhanced our experience and gave a us a better appreciation of the Airmen and their families who endured this isolated post to keep the skies safe. Great job Open Skies. Keep up the good work.

I highly recommend this tour to anyone who served during the Cold War. There is an important story to tell here and the folks at Open Skies are doing...

Definitely would recommend getting a tour (free) thru open skies if you get the chance. Your guide was super friendly, knowledgeable, and overall seemed enthusiastic about the history of this place. Loved hearing their plans for refurbishing this place as time goes along. The views from up here are absolutely breathtaking. Would recommend closed toed shoes for the tour as there is broken glass scattered across the ground in some of the buildings. The tour is about a mile long in length and has a bit of uphill walking with it.
