McKelligon Canyon is one of my favorite outdoor spots in El Paso—nestled in the Franklin Mountains, it offers stunning desert views and a perfect escape from city life. Whether you’re hiking, running, climbing, biking, or attending an amphitheater show, this place has it all.
🧭 Highlights: • Scenic & accessible: The road trail (about a 5 mile round-trip with ~700 ft elevation gain) is paved and ideal for easy hikes, family walks, and morning runs—just bring water and enjoy the fresh air . • Adventure for all levels: Trails like the Ron Coleman Trail lead into steeper, rock scramble terrain. Chains have even been installed in technical spots for added support . • Rock climbing spot: Numerous natural climbing routes among the canyon walls await climbers of all skill levels . • Outdoor amphitheater: The 1,500-seat McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre hosts well-attended concerts, plays (like Viva El Paso!), and events in a breathtaking, natural venue .
💬 From fellow adventurers:
“It’s a nice walk, about 5 miles round trip. It’s a busy path in the morning.” “The views are breathtaking and this side of the mountain is usually shaded.”
✅ What I Loving: • Year-round access to trails & climbing • Easy-to-moderate paved route + challenging offshoots • Incredible desert canyon scenery and wildlife • Unique combo of fitness and culture—hike then catch a show!
⚠️ A Few Tips: • Go early to beat the heat and crowds during summer • Bring lots of water and snacks—facilities are limited • Use trail apps/maps if exploring beyond the main path

Read moreI love going to Mckelligon Canon just to wind down from stress. I can breath cleaner air and have tranquility..The place is just quiet and relaxing .
The Canon serves different purposes for the El Paso community. First of all, there are mountains that surround the canon. Serious and amateur hikers leave their cars at the skirt of the mountain to go for 1 to 4 hours hiking. Second, the Canon has an open amphitheater that seats 300 people. Every Summer, the Company of "Viva El Paso" has their seasonal Musical Show at the amphitheater. Other shows are also presented there like Shakespeare On The Rocks. Third, there is a pavilion near by where weddings and gradations take place during the Summer as well. Moreover, walkers and runners use the short streach road that takes you into the end of the canon to exercise. Enjoy your time there late afternoons and part of the evening. The place is situated on the Northeast of El Paso.

They are really steep and those who have knee issues can't go sit in the front because of these stairs. Second... the chairs are really small and uncomfortable, I highly recommend to brink a cushion!
