We had an excellent lunch! We were the only diners when we seated ourselves. The fried chicken & fish were piping hot & crispy. The chicken was good & fish very good. The meatloaf was tender & seasoned perfectly with extra sauce on the side. The mashed potatoes were well seasoned. The greenbeans were cooked with onions & pork. Carrots were sweet and tender. Vegetable soup had large pcs of tender beef roast with vegetables. It was a bit sweet. The fried okra was tender on the inside & crispy on the outside. Spinach was well seasoned. Mac & cheese, spinach, creamed corn, white gravy and rolls were also offered. Our table did not try them. The salad bar served a mix of leafy greens, very good tomatoes pcs, cucumber, green pepper slices, shredded cheese, croutons with a good variety of dressings. The bar also included slaw, macaroni salad, potato salad, broccoli salad which all tasted home made. The deviled eggs were very good. There was also orange fluffy salad & possiblemorher offerings our table did not sample because we were saving room for desert. The buffet included strawberry cake, butterfinger cake, coconut cake & butter pecan cake. The butter pecan was out very favorite. The cake was very moist & frosty was creamy with plenty of fresh pecans. The coconut cake was also good. We did not sample the other two. Our service was attentive & friendly. Coke products, tea, coffee & water are available. Beer, wine & mixed drinks are also available. We usually enjoy these on the patio but was too chilly on this visit. Sadly this years winter hrs are Fri, Sat & Sun. When we were finished with our lunch the restaurant was full with no...
Read moreWe stayed in the pet friendly cabin C. I dont like giving bad reviews but this cabin is in need of some TLC! The upper deck has a sign to not go out on! Lights were burned out, heaters did not work, the 2 houses across from the cabin were scary looking. The outside had many spider webs. There was a beautiful swing on the back deck facing the Ohio river but the trees that could easily be clipped were obstructing the view. The stairs to the water are only rusted rails missing steps. You could smell the water must as soon as you walked in. There were air fresheners to disguise the smell but those made it even worse. The beds were hard as rock & older rough cotton sheets. The kitchen is in the basement, which if there were a TV, we would have just stayed down there. If you visit this area bring a cooler of food! Grocery stores are hard to find! We ate at the lodge restaurant the first night but not a fan so after a day of hiking we went into Elizabethtown to pick up groceries. Will def go back to Shawnee Forest but will find another place to stay. This cabin has a for sale sign out front & it just seems the owners are just letting it go "as is". So sad. Cant believe they charge $165....
Read moreSecond time we have came! Once a few years back with my son and this time just me and my wife for a little getaway and honestly it has been nice. We had another little one in 2016 so it may be a bit til we can come together just because he is too young but we will be back. Stayed in the last cabin which I believe is B4. Same as last time. Actually found our log from our exported edition in 2015. To add to the allure their was a lunar eclipse as dusk set in. We don’t have much time as we do have a young one now and not much family that can help but honestly I could move in. Something about the setup here as a whole that makes the allure something special. Remember what is the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. It’s that little EXTRA... Now that I have sounded like the corniest fella in the house I’m gonna sign off. Small town of cave in rock makes it special all in its own right. Seriously though give it a try. U...
