I came to Chow for my birthday with my girlfriend for dinner. We ordered some wine and oysters to start. It took some time to get our drinks and our appetizer but it was busy so we didn't bother us. After we received our wine and oysters we had a disagreement (like normal people have all the time) and decided we were going to leave so I asked the waitress for our bill. She must have thought we were not happy with her service or the food because a manager was sent to the table to make sure everything was okay. We assured her everything was fine on there part we just wanted to leave and go home and it had nothing to do with the restaurant. I paid the bill and tipped the waitress a generous tip compaired to our bill.. After she left we continued finishing our wine and oysters. Before we could finish the waitress came back to the table and asked me if I needed to leave to which I responded yes after we finish what we have at our table to which she responded no you need to leave now and your girlfriend is staying and leaving with someone else. My girlfriend and I were shocked! We both felt insulted. My girlfriend immediately stood up and said no I am not and you have no right to dictate that and that we would be leaving together. We both got up and left. I decided that it was unfair for us to be treated like that and went back in to speak with a manager. The manager was not sure how to handle the situation so she asked me to wait so she could get the owner involved. After waiting for 20 minutes the owner walks out the back with a person with his arms crossed who I assume was a cook who seemed more like a person meant to intimidate me walk up to me and ask me what I want. I told them I told the manager the situation and thought she explained it to him and that's why I was waiting for him to come and resolve the issue. Instead of resolving anything he told me to leave and call back tomorrow and explain everything to him. In response to that I told him that I would like to deal with it now since tomorrow I would be busy but he just told me to leave. I told him again that myself and my girlfriend were mistreated at his place of business and I was personally profiled for being a person of color. His response was if you don't leave I will call the cops on you. Now with that being said I had done nothing wrong at all. We sat quietly ate our food and had our drinks and payed the bill and for wanting to be treated the same as everyone else there I was threatened to have the police on me. I eventually gave up on trying to fix the situation and told them goodbye and left. This was the worse and most disrespect restaurant I have ever visited. As a person of color I am use to these types of situations especially in the area I live (monticello) however I am not use to it from a business or a business owner. I myself am in the service industry and know this is not a way to treat a customer and is a human being I know that's not a way to treat a fellow human being. The food my be good but it does not make up for the actions of the staff and owner against my girlfriend and I. We will never reccomend this place to anyone and we will not be back to this place. No one even apologized to us for anything. I was treated like a criminal,...
Read moreThis place looked interesting so we decided to give it a try for our date night. Upon entering, it had a great atmosphere, wide open and not crowded. They could have easily put more seating in there but they didn't so it feels comfortable.
The menu is on the smaller side for selection. there are a few categories of entree's and only a few choices in each. Despite a small menu, there were still quite a few interesting looking things.
There were no drinks, or drink specials, no signature cocktails or showcased local breweries for beer, we were just given 2 wine lists and told it was a full bar and they could make whatever. This was a little disappointing, but no matter as we intended to have wine anyway.
The first thing that stood out, was the amount of picked... everything on the menu... Lots of pickled things... lots... I love pickled things, but this seemed a bit over the top.
Our server was nice, but not very attentive. We asked a few questions about the menu and the server was able to answer some of them but not all the questions. It didn't seem as if she couldn't remember, but rather, was never taught about the menu. I do not blame the server for this as the restaurant should have trained the staff to know the entire menu inside and out, especially since it is small to begin with and incredibly unique.
We ordered the charcuterie plate. One of the more sparse charcuterie plate I've had. Still the flavor was great. The bread came after our appetizer at a really random time, it was also very hard and chewy bread, not very good. tasted like a day old baguette from a bakery, but the butter it came with was so good we spread it on and ate some anyway.
We wound up finding the BBQ menu on the back side at the last minute and decided to order from there (this is not on their website and the server didn't even mention it so it's easily missed). The Pulled pork was excellent, with pickled Onions on the sandwich and pickled cabbage and carrots on the side. (they call it chow chow). It also came with fries. The fries were easily the best thing I had. My wife had the pulled chicken and she liked it. She had ordered baked beans with it, thinking it would be the side that came with it as the side on the menu was not specific for that item but on the pulled pork it was stated as fries and Chow chow. she got fries as well as beans and they charged us extra for the beans, so be clear if you want to try to sub a side.
All in all this place has potential. The food is good, but the restaurant seems to struggle with it's identity. The food is high class, the bar is not. The ambiance is high class, but the wait staff's training doesn't' match. We had a pleasant experience and enjoyed our food and wait staff but felt the place didn't measure up to it's own vision. There is nothing in our experience that can't be made better over time. If we do come back, it will be a while down the road when the place has better established itself and is more refined.
I definitely would recommend everyone at least try this place...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I decided to give this place a try on a Saturday night. I was nervous because I get anxiety in loud crowded places, but was pleasantly surprised it was very comfortable inside. Busy, but not overcrowded. We were told a 20 minute wait, but sat almost immediately. We were sat in what I would think would be the banquet area. I felt disconnected from the restaurant but it was still nice. Our waitress was very nice, but not very knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered a cocktail, and my boyfriend a soda. They were delivered in a timely manner. However we did not have coasters or napkins, which bothered me, as all the other tables around us had one, and I don't like my glass sweating on to the table. I ordered the ribs with the chow and mac n cheese as sides, my boyfriend the half chicken with fries and mac n cheese. We waited a very long time for our food... it was a Saturday so to be expected, but I noticed our food being ran to a different table..they were already eating and said it wasn't theirs. The side was different on the ribs, it had fries and mac, so I thought possibly it had gotten ran out 2 times accidentally to the table.... but 15 minutes later our food arrived it looked good and smelled great. I went to take my first bite and my ribs were freezing! Not exaggerating. I knew they were from being ran out before because underneath my ribs were a ton of fries... so they switched the ribs I watched be ran out earlier for my sides...fine...but warm them at least, his chicken was also cold, but he decided to eat it because was hungry. I sent mine back to be warmed. Kept my sides to eat. They were good. The chow was different, pickled cabbage and spicy. My new ribs came about 10 minutes later.... cold....again...I could literally hold the whole rack in my hand without any warmth. (No extra napkins or wet cloth to wipe my now dirty hand😩😂)The flavor was good and I was starving, so I ate a couple..But no waitress to check back, no manager to check back for a send back either... although he was very present to everyone around us..that was 50+. We were the youngest for sure on the banquet side (I am 31). I felt a tad discriminated against, because I watched him for some time and he spoke to 5 different tables but completely avoided ours... I never did speak to a manager about the rib situation. I had to ask for refills, and a box, and our check, and by this time there was no wait or hustle in the restaurant. I knew going into this it would be a little all over the place as it's a new establishment, but I did figure they would be on top of their customer service at least. We will give this restaurant another try in the future once they work the...
