Who’s ready for for some waterfall action!? Now that it’s June, my hikes in Virginia will be involving a LOT more water! 😅 Here are ten of my FAVORITE waterfall hikes in the state: [📌Save to plan your summer hiking!] 1. South River Falls (Shenandoah NP) 2. Cedar Run Falls- my favorite for swimming (Shenandoah NP) 3. White Oak Canyon- there are at least 6 waterfalls on this trail! (Shenandoah NP) 4. Dark Hollow Falls- option to add Rose River (Shenandoah NP) 5. Overall Run Falls- also several waterfalls, including the tallest in the park! (Shenandoah NP) 6. Doyle’s River Falls- option to add Jones Run Falls (Shenandoah NP) 7. Apple Orchard Falls- off the Blue Ridge Parkway (Buchanan, VA) 8. Crabtree Falls- the tallest in the state (Tyro, VA) 9. Great Falls (Mclean, VA) 10. Devils Bathtub (Duffield, VA) Still on my list: 💦Falling Spring Falls (Covington, VA) 💦Cascade Falls (Pembroke, VA) 💦Saint Mary’s Falls (Raphine, VA) 💦Hone Quarry (Dayton, VA) 💦Roaring Run Furnace (Eagle Rock, VA) 👉🏼Which one are you hiking to first!? ⛔️Help preserve the beauty of Virginia by staying on established trails, disposing of all waste (even food scraps), respecting wildlife, and leaving what you find. Visit lnt.org for more info. ⛔️ Be safe, and have fun!

IT’S WATERFALL SEASON in Shenandoah National Park! 🔥 Since it’s National Park Week, I thought I’d share some of my favorite waterfall hikes in my favorite National Park. Shenandoah has so many beautiful waterfalls, and mid-late spring is a great time to check them out! Of course, you can save them for summer too when you need a place to cool off. 😊 Check out these 12 amazing hikes in SNP: [📌SAVE to plan your next hike!] 👉🏼Which one are you trying first?? ⛔️Help preserve the beauty of Shenandoah by staying on established trails, packing out all waste (even food scraps 🐻), respecting wildlife, and leaving what you find. Visit lnt.org for more info! ⛔️ 📍Cedar Run Falls [Hard] 📍White Oak Canyon [Hard; for something easier, just hike 1.5 miles to lower White Oak Falls from the parking area on Weakly Hollow Road] 📍Naked Creek Falls [Hard] 📍Lewis Spring Falls [Moderate] 📍Dark Hollow Falls [Moderate] 📍Rose River Falls [Moderate] 📍Doyle’s River Falls [Moderate] 📍Jones Run Falls [Moderate] 📍Overall Run Falls [Moderate from Matthews Arm campground] 📍Hazel Falls [Moderate] 📍Big Rock Falls [Easy-Moderate] 📍South River Falls [Moderate] 🥾Keep in mind most of these hikes involve decent elevation gain, as you’ll have to hike down to the falls and back out again. The terrain can be rocky, steep, and treacherous when wet, so please use caution! Wear sturdy shoes and bring poles if you have them.

Saved the best for last! 😏 With its lush greenery and beautiful waterfalls, Shenandoah is a great summer travel destination. We’ve compiled our favorite summer hikes along with our best tips to help you plan the perfect summer trip to SNP! [📌SAVE this post & SHARE w/ your travel pals.] BEST HIKES: 1. Mary’s Rock 2. Blackrock Summit 3. Dark Hollow Falls 4. Hazel Falls and Caves 5. Stony Man Mountain 6. Doyle’s River Falls + Jones Run Falls 7. South River Falls 8. Hightop Peak 9. Cedar Run Falls 10. White Oak Canyon Trail 11. Compton Peak 12. Hawksbill Mountain 13. Rose River Falls Trail 14. Old Rag Mountain Bonus: Bearfence is a quick hike with a rock scramble and 360 views! TIPS FOR VISITING: 1. Use your America the Beautiful Pass or buy an entrance pass online beforehand. 2. The campgrounds will likely be full on weekends, but first come first serve sites may be available. 4. Look for less trafficked trails to avoid crowds. Try starting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. 5. Check Alltrails for routes that fit your time schedule. 6. You probably won’t have service in the park, so offline maps are your friend! 7. There is one gas station at Big Meadows that should be re-opening soon. 8. Skyland Lodge has the BEST blackberry pie! 9. Remember to follow all principle of Leave No Trace. Help leave the park better than you found it! *For summer events and other unique opportunities in the park, follow @snptrust. 👉🏼Will you visit Shenandoah this summer!?

South River Falls - Shenandoah National Park, 28 May 2024

I don't think this trail carries the notoriety that some of the others do, but it turned out to be one of my favorite places to visit while at the park. Located at mile marker 62.8, this trail is only marked at 3.3 miles long, but it felt felt much farther than that. Maybe it was because it was my 4th and last trail I took on for that day. Maybe it was the many switchbacks down the mountain and into the valley only to lose the trail once I reached the bottom. Maybe I was just hungry, which is pretty common 😄. At any rate, this one challenged me by the end of it, but the reward was oh so sweet. Tucked away at the bottom was probably my favorite waterfall during the whole trip. Once I found it, I just had to go for a swim, even though that water had to be around 40 degrees 🥶. In the 3rd slide is a video of the top of the waterfall as it dissappears into the lush greenery of the valley below. You'll see this just before the observation deck about halfway down the mountain. Many will stop here, take a few obscured shots of the falls at a distance, and simply leave. DONT BE THOSE PEOPLE! Trust me, the rest of the decent into the valley is well worth it. As you finally come to the creek bed at the bottom of the mountain, it seems to just stop at what appears to be a dead end. It is not. Look back over your shoulder and tucked away in the corner is another trail marker neatly hidden away by the trees with a barely noticeable path running beside it (5th slide). Follow the path for another 1/4 mile or so, and the waterfall will eventually reveal its magnificent self. It's quite a site, especially if you catch it in late spring to early summer while there's plenty of rainfall. Sit, stay awhile, and take it all in. After my swim, I even found a "coin for the ferryman" to mark the occasion, and one I'll keep till that time comes. That hike ended my longest recorded day (so far) at 32,762 steps, over 200 floors, and just shy of 14 miles. What a day!!! Certainly one to remember...

Oh, and if you read down this far, thank you. You are my kind...

I would say this is on the tougher side of moderate. The hike down to the falls wasn't too bad, but we saw people struggling on the way back. I suggest taking the alternate route back - it is much more gradual of a slope and even terrain. To do this, go just past the overlook when you get to it, and then follow the signs for the fire road to the left. The view of the falls from the main hike isn't great (unless you want to hike further), and we didn't see too much foliage, but it was enjoyable overall and only took us about 2 hours. There's a decent amount of parking at the picnic area, but I imagine it fills up on some...

The hike to the observation point is easy, but steep. The view from the observation point is not great. There is one tree that blocks 50% of the view. However, you can hike an additional .5 miles and reach the base which is spectacular. The closer you get to the base the more treacherous the trail gets with large, loose, wet rocks. It's worth it though when you are swimming in the small pond at the base. If you choose to do the loop, it connects you to a fire road. Wide and easy, but steep. More likely you will run into a bear going this way. It also adds about .7 miles...
