I took the most popular route that is the Hunter Trail, a 2.7-mile round trip that takes you to the summit. While the distance may seem manageable, the trail is difficult due to its steep ascents, rugged terrain, and the use of fixed cables to navigate certain sections. The trail involves a vertical climb and some scrambling, requiring both physical stamina and a steady focus. It is not for beginners or those with a fear of heights.
The views are unparalleled, offering sweeping panoramas of the Sonoran Desert and surrounding mountain ranges.
At the summit, the reward is a breathtaking 360-degree view.
Tips for Hikers
Preparation: Bring plenty of water and sturdy footwear are essential.
Safety: The cable sections can be tricky; gloves with a good grip are highly recommended.
Timing: The best time to hike is during the cooler months (October to April). Avoid hiking in summer due to extreme temperatures.
Fees: There is a day-use fee for entering Picacho Peak State Park. More than 4 people per car adds $3 per person on top of the regular fee.
Conclusion
Hiking Picacho Peak is challenging but rewarding. It is an unforgettable experience for those who enjoy pushing their limits However, it is best suited for seasoned hikers or those prepared for a strenuous outing.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely—but know your limits to make the most of this...
Read moreThis Pichacho peak hike was the highlight of my trip from Wickenburg to Sierra Vista! We stopped in at the park in the late morning and had about 2 hours to spend on the mountain before we had to continue on in order to get to our destination on time. The entrance fee was $20 since we had more than 1 person in our party. My first thoughts about the entrance fee was that that was pretty pricey for just two hours in the park but in the end, it was worth it. We hustled right along on the way up without too many rests since we weren’t sure how to plan since we had a time limit. The trail zig zags up the front of the mountain and then heads right and then down around the side to the back where it then takes you to the final ascent to the top. It is an invigorating hike and is fairly steep in places. We spent a bit of time at the top shooting pictures and grabbing some nutrition from our packs. We then started our descent and didn’t waste too much time although we did make a few small stops to chat and shoot some photos. Overall I’d say 2 hours plus is what you’d want to plan for, if you are thinking about doing this hike. I’m sure people have done it in less but that was what felt comfortable to us and I wished we were just a little less pressed for time. This hike is an Awesome display of God’s amazing creation!...
Read moreLet it be known. There is a safe place to sleep in your car where you NEVER get harassed. I like to pull off into the trees across the street of the gas station. Some awesome spots to stay undisturbed for some restful Zzzs. I've driven from Tucson to Florence probably 300 times. Averaged $800 a month in fuel driving back and forth. Service in the shops always fantastic. Top notch place, but having that safe lot with the Semi drivers always gave me a warm, safe feeling knowing I doubt any wackos would try anything with so much on the road truckers always quick to interrupt would be robbers and car jackers. Across the street from the biggest gift/gas station in that spot I recommend for safe place to sleep (protected) noone can see you from road. The freight trains go thru there every hour or sometimes more often.. I don't know what it is about the sound of 1 million pounds of steel on wheels passing your vehicle from 20 feet away but some of the deepest most restful sleep I've ever had was in my Yukon , back there.. with my dog , she loved to run around in the trees and stuff.. and I would play on my phone with Netflix and just relax after almost falling asleep after a 12 hour hard...
