This is an amazing geologic site. If you got an all-terrain vehicle it seems like the place to come, although I didn't. There are plenty of places to park an RV for the day.
This is not a sand dune, or a place to come to climb on sand. IF YOU PLAN ON WALKING ON THE SAND MOUNTAIN, I RECOMMEND WEARING ONE OF THOSE ORANGE REFLECTIVE VESTS. THIS MIGHT KEEP YOU FROM GETTING RUN OVER.
It is an amazingly large mountain of sand, and it's got an interesting geologic history.
It's also a good place to come fly a drone. But in the summer it's blazing hot and the sun is intensely bright, as you would expect. Be sure to bring a sun shield for your drone controller if you plan on flying.
I do not recommend driving a car. I came in a all wheel drive Honda CRV, by no means an off-road vehicle. I was able to negotiate the rocky Sandy terrain leaving into the parking lot. But if you had a low riding sedan, you would get stuck for sure. The parking area is not paved, and much of it is covered with up to 30 cm or more of drifting sand.
There are public restrooms oh, and some interpretive signs.
this is not a place to bring the kids for the day unless you're planning on...
Read moreA must stop site if you’re driving Highway 50. Don’t worry about the access road. It is paved and I took the first pic from the car park near the entrance. I’d visited it a few years ago when it was just a sand dune in the middle of nowhere. It’s now been turned into a recreational area and is used by various off road vehicles. There is a charge to enter but if you talk nicely to the staff on the entrance they will give you a free 1 hour car pass if you’re just sight seeing for under an hour. When you first see it from Highway 50 you just can not appreciate just how big the sand dune actually is. Well worth a visit if you’re passing. Be VERY careful when driving in and out. The access road is in perfect condition but the drainage channels across the road are nigh on impossible to see and they will trash the underside of your car if you hit them above the posted 5mph...
Read moreSand mountain is an awesome sight when you riding straight up the face, if you have a big bore CR 500 with a paddle tire you can make it up over the top without a paddle tire you will need to find out for yourself. There are plenty of dunes to ride in so you do not have to worry about finding a great place to ride. There is not any bad places to ride and if you like hard dirt there are plenty of dirt trails and of to the side of the oasis camp groun there is a huge...
