To say that this course is a gem is to understate the case. The greens keeping is outstanding, just enough, not over manicured, and this sets off the natural flora, the harmonious community of oaks and pines and the various grasses and meadowflowers; very little corruption of the beatutiful capescape with flower plantings, except for one magnificent rhododendron by the 13th green. The greens are as good at greens get! It's a classic design by the legendary Deveraux Emmet, and serves as an illustration of his brilliance, particularly, in my view, in the way he uses the rolling glacial moraine to conjure holes which entice and delight, beckon and tease. You don't have to carry an approach shot to his greens but can use a land route if that's your wont. This keeps with the traditional style of the British layouts that Emmet studied and sketched as an associate for CB MacDonald. As a senior golfer I loved the choice of running the ball onto the green,. It's apparent that the architect spent time walking the property and allowing his creative genius to form the images of the holes that we still enjoy, 98 years after their construction. Kudos to the staff, polite and helpful, and to the superintendent who is, in my view, a capable curator of this historical beauty of a...
Read morePace was very slow. At times had almost 2 foursomes on the same tee box. We didn't see a ranger out on the course till the 15th hole. Round took a little longer than 5 hours. Instead of spacing the foursomes out, the starter had one group go out after another. Everytime the beverage cart came around didn't have any Gatorade or Powerade drinks.
There is one par 4 on the back nine where you have a blind tee shot over a hill. There is a spot where you need to ring a bell when you are done, but one there is a broken head of a 9 iron, there which I am guessing you are supposed to hit the metal piece hanging. The problem is no one knows this because one of our players had the ball go over his head as he was shooting.
Open fairways, but some holes you would hit a perfect drive down the middle, but due to the slope of the fairway, your drive ends up in either the rough or woods. The greens ran pretty true, the traps needed to be groomed. Tee boxes were for the most part good. A lot of the greens, especially the back nine, were severely elevated. If you didn't make it to the top, the ball would roll halfway down the hill.
Putting green is very small, so if there is more than 10 players practicing there is no...
Read moreGreat course, played front nine in 2 hours. Sad part is the group behind us were a foursome of bald members who screamed every tee box to hurry up on the fairways and greens at the balls we had just gotten to. There was a group of older couples ahead of us so we literally had nowhere to go. We decided instead of beating the Jesus out of these clowns to simply head home. Spoke with one of them in the snack shop to tell him we were done and to chill out he says- “sorry, we’re members, we’re used to playing a round in two and a half hours”. So in mid July on a Friday on Cape cod you expect to play a Donald Ross coup designed course and all that entails with chipping and putting complicated greens in 2.5 hours? Clowns. To the course management- manage your entitled membership- someone’s going to get thrashed out there sooner or later. To the chef- great double...
