Read moreI used to rate Watsonâs 4 stars, but after recent experiences, I feel compelled to sound the alarm. And apply a better rating due to my experience.
Iâve purchased several houseplants from Watsonâs over timeâincluding two orchids, a yucca, and a few others. On Motherâs Day, I picked up four more varieties. When I got home and began showing them off to friends, I noticed something moving in the dirt.
Turns out the soil was infestedâwith centipede-like bugs and fungus gnats. And this wasnât just one plantâit was all of them. These are houseplants, not garden vegetables. I expected clean, quality soil, not a biohazard.
I had to gut and replace the soil on every single plant, treat them with a peroxide solution, and immediately start quarantine procedures. The yucca was so badly infected with what appears to be bacterial leaf spot that I had to cut 32 leaves off to try to save it. And because it was near my other plants, I now have a snake plant and a pothos fighting off infection too.To be clearâthe bacterial infection on the yucca was not visible at the time of purchase. Like many houseplant enthusiasts, I carefully checked leaves and stems before selecting it. The symptoms only became obvious after 3â5 days at home, once the plant had adjusted to new lighting and airflow. Itâs very likely that the infection was incubating silently in the overly moist, pest-ridden soil used by the greenhouse.
This wasnât caused by my environment or handling. The problem was already present and simply wasnât visible until the plant began to react to healthier conditions and finally showed signs of stress. Which is exactly what makes this situation so frustratingâI didnât bring the infection in, I uncovered it.
Watsonâs claims to be top-tier, but the condition of these plants and their soil says otherwise. If youâre a houseplant parent who cares deeply about the health of your green babies, please proceed with caution. Soil is the foundation of any plantâs lifeâand this foundation was absolutely rotten.
Disappointed doesnât even begin...
Read more3.5 stars, but rounding up to 4.
If I had nothing to compare Watsonâs to I would give them 5 stars. The selection is great. I love the house plant selection along with the home goods & garden items. Staff was friendly, helpful, & knowledgeable. I even saw staff helping an elderly customer load purchases into their car. They have a generous rewards program & great family friendly events.
BUT when compared to my go-to greenhouse Watsonâs comes in a little short. Although their plants perfectly fine, healthier plants at better prices are available if you travel a bit out of the metro. Iâll post some pictures below for reference.
The first picture is of rosemary. Watsonâs on the left, competitor on the right. The plant from the competitor has a healthier color, bushier growth, & a better taste (Watsonâs is quite bitter). If you notice, the Watsonâs plant is $2 more expensive & from the same initial source. Assuming the differences are due to type &/or lack of fertilizer.
Next picture is vinca. Watsonâs on the left, competitor on the right. Same initial source & also $2 more expensive at Watsonâs. Competitorâs plant is denser, lusher (more growth points), & longer trailing. Watsonâs does have a couple blooms, but that probably comes down to the difference of the fertilizer used. I grow vinca for trailing foliage, so I couldnât care less about the blooms.
Overall, Watsonâs is a great option especially if youâre close. I will return to Watsonâs occasionally for the large variety, home goods, & family events but I will get the majority of my...
