Our experience with Meyer's Tails Up Farm is from boarding our Great Dane for 8 days while we went on vacation. We left him with enough food to get six cups of a food a day( a cup more a day then he gets at home), and while I understand that dogs can shed weight from being nervous in a boarding facility, he had dropped over ten pounds when we picked him up. He smelled HORRENDOUS. They are very forth right that if you dont pay basically double the rate for boarding, he doesn't get to play with the other dogs from day care and will stay in his kennel for the duration of the boarding. The entire time we were gone, we didnt get any reports that anything was wrong or that he had started losing a large amount of weight. When we started asking some questions about the amount of weight he had lost and how he could smell so badly when he no interaction with other dogs, we got some very surprising answers.
The Boarding facility states that they close at 6pm every day, which I took to mean the front door gets locked and the dogs start getting settled in for dinner and end of day routine. No. Not the case at all. By 615pm every night ALL of the staff leaves, meaning some dogs will have gotten their last bathroom break for the night up to an hour before that. Not a single staff member is there all night, and they do not return until 7am. When asked how this could possibly be safe, they mentioned that some one lives in the house that shares the property and that "If something was really wrong, they could probably hear them barking or something". On top of that, that means that any dog that boards there is supposed to hold if for over 12 hours. They have no where to let themselves out, and if your dog is larger it also means they have no way to not lay in accident all night, from not being able to hold it for 12-14 hours. Personally I feel like this is boarder line neglect if not abuse, no animal should be forced to lay all night in a mess because you cant be bothered to let them out at night at a normal time for a dog before bed.
We also showed up to pick him up at 10am, when asked if he had eaten breakfast the lady up front told us he hadnt finished all his food and we might want to feed him again when we got home. When brought out to us, he was also brought with his un-opened prepackaged breakfast we had put together. They hadnt feed him at all yet. While it seems like a minor thing, do not lie to my face about whether my dog had gotten food. He eats twice a day and that would have meant I took him home and didnt feed him until dinner time.
I will NEVER board here again, much less use their day care. I cant believe they are even still in business. I dont know how anyone could feel safe boarding their dogs here when they show such little regard for how they care for...
