Tired of overpriced U.S. dental facilities, we got our passports and set up an appointment for the wife in Los Algodones, Baja, (aka, Molar City). A pleasant surprise, to say the least, we paid for our passports, our entire trip, the little woman's total mouth dental procedure consisting of an entire mouth full of zirconia crowns and 2 root canals, plus 2 pairs of new progressive lensed eyeglasses, and an across the border shopping spree and some dining for just 25% of the cost of the dental estimate in the states alone. |||| Located a groomer/dog sitter business in Yuma and asked what RV Park she would recommend. (There are around a dozen huge 55+ RV parks listed, starting 20 miles east of Yuma and continuing along I-8 to the Business Loop exit. She recommeneded Cocopah Bend (not even listed in our G.S. Travel Directory) because of it's location away from the Interstate noise and the town bustle. What a find. Located about 10 minutes west of the I-8 Business Loop and surrounding commercial areas, this park is surrounded by huge fields supporting vegetable agriculture, yet it is easily accessible, with shopping and dining just minutes away. Cocopah Bend has every amenity except for cable TV. (About 20 channels available on air antenna, about half of which are Spanish stations. ABC/NBC/CBS/Fox/PBS and several others are available in English). The huge, level, gravel sites come with concrete patios, a huge, unfenced dog park where you and your critters can make new friends, a friendly atmosphere, golf and other activities if you're interested, and peace and quiet. Weekly rate is $309 and they prorated our 8th day to the weekly rate. Security gate at entrance manned 24/7. ||||From now on, if we need dental work or eyeglasses, this is where we're going: Cocopah Bend RV Resort in Yuma, and Supreme Dental on Aveneida A, in the Plaza Guadalajara, in Los Algodones. Easy border access 6 miles west of I-8 Business Loop (huge exit sign says Mexico). 5 minutes south to Andrade border crossing. Huge, fenced and patrolled parking lot on the right just north of the crossing on the U.S. side. $6 a day and easy access from right southbound lane. Easy walk from the lot to the crossing on foot. If you take your vehicle across, be prepared for a line of cars if you're leaving, because when the dentist offices shut down at about 5:30 p.m. the shops, vendors and town closes down, too....
Read moreI don't stay at Cocpah RV Park, but it looks very inviting and the lots are big. I visit and play golf there from time to time. The restaurant has excellent food. The people that work there are great! The swimming pool and hot tub looks very inviting, they have horseshoes and pickleball courts, and they have an office with an activities director. It would be nice if they had CORNHOLE events at the resort.
The Golf Clubhouse is okay, plenty of reasonably priced golf balls golf shoes clothing etc. The grounds people are very friendly, overall the entire staff at Cocopah is very friendly, everybody likes to wave and say hello and wish you a good morning.
The golf course is a little bit of disappointment, as to it's physical shape. Up till 3 months ago we (a group of 6 of us) played there a couple times a week and took a break when they were aerating and supposedly seeding the fairways. They water the course plenty, but the grass, the seeding, did not seem to take effect. There are large areas in all of the fairways that are completely Barren or just full of weeds. You hit a great Drive, it goes down the Fairway, & ends up with all kinds of mud on the ball, or you're in a patch of weeds & can't hit out of them. We adapted to this and decided if you hit in the weeds or in the mud that you could move the ball to a patch of grass (if you could find one) pick and clean & place nearest you. Now this course is really fun to play and hit the ball and it could be a great course if they just took care of the fairways. The greens are good, very consistent as far as play and putting from green to green.
I'd really like to give this Resort five stars, but I can't because of the golf course condition.
P.S. 3 months ago we talked to a fella who seemed to be the head groundskeeper. He was very excited about all the changes and work they were doing to make the course better, he was explaining to us how they were aerating and about how they had plans to reseed all the fairways. But apparently they forgot to seed or it just...
Read moreSuper disappointed to see what has happened to the Cocopah Bend Golf Course. For 20+ years the grounds crew staff did their very best to keep grass growing. They were self educated and worked extremely hard to offer the best golf course possible. The former crew boss was hired away in recent years to another local course, Las Barrancas. The condition of Cocopah GC currently is UNPLAYABLE. The fact that they got $35 green fees from me should have embarrassed them for asking for it. There was no grass, just dirt, over 85% of the course. There is evidence of effort, misguided as it was. What is left now is an ugly dirt patch, one that is going to take years to repair. The place has always had a tendency to undervalue the importance of quality employees in crucial positions. This time, they have cut their own throat. It will take no time for the winter visitors, who were previously the life force of the place, to abandon it for greener pastures. The Pro Shop however was well stocked and beautiful. Which showed only that the people in charge have yet to realize that a golf course isn't you back yard, and that throwing down some grass seed isn't going to fix the disaster zone that this place has become. Avoid this golf course like the plague. Free would have been a ripoff for this...
