We are blissed out from hiking the West Rim Trail today! The lovely woman at the Visitor Center directed us to turn at Pilar onto 570, drive along the River 6 miles on a paved road, then cross the one lane bridge onto a steep 1.5 mile rocky dirt cliff side road (we put our Suburban into L and 4 wheel drive) that brought us to the top of the canyon. We parked and walked along the west Rim Trail. Absolutely stunning views of the mountains all around and the gorge and river below. This route avoided crowds, there were very few people.

Interesting bridge. Even if you aren't afraid of heights, you might feel a little nervous walking out on this bridge, especially when a big truck drives over it. The views are worth it though. There is a rest area right past the bridge and a walking trail you can follow to get to the bridge so you don't have to walk on the main road. The view is spectacular. In the parking lot of the rest area, there were local people selling crafts on the day we went. There were also big horn sheep in the distance.
