Let me start off by saying the only reason I go to this range is because it is near my house. I'm writing this review in the hopes that someone does not go out of their way to drive there. There are much better ranges all over Houston.
Be ready to pay a pretty penny. Prices are high, you are charged per range, per gun, per person. You better remember to bring your hearing and eye protection because you will be charged for that too.
Don’t take a shirt you like because they have to staple tickets to it to show proof of payment and what ranges you are allowed to go.
The employees tend to have an attitude almost every time I go. I have been told by their incredibly knowledgeable range officers that I am wasting my time shooting my AR15 at the 100-yard range because they do not reach out that far. I am an Army veteran so I have shot an M4 at steel plates 300 yards out with irons sights so I can't even listen to someone after they say 100 yards is impossible.
I had the bright idea of asking about bolt action rifles to one of their sells reps and he explained that every rifle I asked about was trash and that only a Remington 700 would do. I told him I would do some research online and he and his sale men buddies joked in front of me about dumb people that look up YouTube videos and read forums to gather information about firearms. We should not research but seek professional help like them. Come to find out they are a Remington dealer and that is why every other rifle is garbage.
I have gone with my brother to shoot our pistols and had the range officer stand directly behind us the entire time. I'm not sure if he thought we were going to break a rule or something but that made us uncomfortable and we left after shooting a couple of mags each.
You are not allowed to put a magazine in your semi rifles. You are to put one the bullet at a time. This can be very frustrating when trying to zero a rifle.
On the pistol side, the rules are not the same every time I go. It strictly depends on who is there and the mood they are in. You can have someone that will let you shoot your pistol at a moderate rate or you can have someone that will scream at you for shooting a round every two seconds. They will have a cease fire if you have the audacity to shoot and not count to 5 in between shots.
Their system on the pistol side is very flawed, if someone walks up they will have a cease fire until they put new targets out. This might sound like a minor inconvenience but on a Saturday when it's busy they will have a cease fire every 5 minutes. Why targets aren't set up already and why they don’t replace all the targets that need to be replaced at once is beyond me. Apparently, a better idea is to cease fire every couple of minutes.
To close out my rant I will say that if you need to zero in a rifle and are in a hurry and live nearby it is an okay spot to go. Expect attitude and to pay too much but for convenience sake it is okay. If that doesn't apply to you I suggest...
Read moreThis gun range holds a special place in my heart. Iv been shooting here off and on since the late 80s. No it’s not a modern facility, but if you want that, you can go to that somewhere else. This is the place you go when you go old school, or back to the basics. (Sylvester Stallone, Rocky IV training if you will). I read a review that said it’s “outdoors and in the cold and rain”. Well if your hunting, it’s gunna be outdoors and most hunting seasons are in the cold, and possibly raining. It’s been family owned and run for Decades. So I understand (also being in a family business) that they wanna keep the tradition and history alive. The trophies inside are like a museum from Mr Bailey, in a time capsule from Teddy Roosevelt, and Ernest Hemingway. There is an experience and value in just walking through the place.
In the mid 90s, my father and I were heading to the range on a weekend morning and there was a stopped train on the tracks just out front of the range. My dad decided not to wait it out and tried to go around the train over the gravel tracks and we ended up stuck, high centered in our Toyota Land Cruiser on the tracks. Bernard Bailey himself jumped on his family tractor, drove out, stopped traffic and pulled and towed us free, just a polite, genuine act of kindness.
Also when you walk up to the #1 station, at the 100 yard rifle range there is a small memorial for “Doc”. An amazing man that passed away many years ago. Almost every time we went to the range to shoot, he was already there first thing in the morning, always social and eager to help shooters and share knowledge of his passion for shooting. What gun range do you know that has an eternal respect and memorial for a client like that, his seat and spot where he used to shoot is retired and memorialized forever.
I can actually go on about many more memories and experiences Iv had at this place but I’ll leave it at that. This is what in my mind is a “real” gun range. A place to shoot, learn, experience history, and have no distraction of trying to be upsold every moment by bells and whistles. Yes Bailey’s need to stop stapling tickets to customers shirts. But I love Bailey’s house of guns. I wish I didn’t move away so far so I can come more often. Go to a range to focus on shooting, not on how fresh the...
Read moreEvery time I've been to Bailey's it's been a good SAFE experience. The negative reviews on here are more of a selling point than anything. Almost all of them involve "the reviewer" trying to do something unsafe and getting called out by Bailey's staff.
Bailey's doesn't allow rapid fire because their rifle range isn't set up for it. The backstop isn't tall enough to account for muzzle rise also a highway runs less than a half mile behind the backstop. So if you want to live out your Rambo/whatever other movie fantasy with your slide fire AR/AK this isn't the range for you. One more thing these so called rapid fire gun experts think they know everything yet they aren't smart enough know what a range is set up for and what it isn't. In actuality they are just smart enough to be dangerous to everyone around them.
If you are into firing your pistol "gangsta" style or firing two pistols at once this isn't the range for you. They do allow multi round firing on the pistol range you just can't burn through an entire clip. I've shot two and three round burst and never had a word said to me or anyone else doing the same.
If your having SAFETY issues like you can't hit the backstop or are hitting the wall designed to knock down bullets repeatedly because your sights/scope are so far out. They will shut you down in a hurry until the problem gets resolved.
In my experience Bailey's staff goes out of their way to provide a safe environment for you and your family to shoot. The problem is any idiot that can pass a background check can own a firearm and Bailey's tries to keep their range as idiot free...
