To golfers in Myrtle Beach and those who travel from many miles away, Caledonia Golf and Fish Club is Myrtle Beach golf. Since opening to the public in January 1994, Caledonia has rapidly gained and maintained a reputation as one of the premier resort courses in America. In 2016, Golf Magazine ranked Caledonia as one of the āTop 100 Courses You Can Playā and Golf Week placed it on its list of āTop 100 Resort Courses in Americaā for 2016 and 2017.
A quick look at the scorecard tells you that at 6,526 yards from the back tees, this Mike Strantz masterpiece is not likely to overwhelm the long hitter. But consider that itās a par 70 course and the rating/slope from the tips is 71.8/138, and you quickly learn this course is no pushover. In fact, the White Tees at 5,710 yards (67.6/127) will show most golfers a challenge and a good time.
Ask any newcomer to the course which hole was their favorite, and the majority will choose Number 18. Itās a 377-yard par 4 that requires something less than driver off the tee. The goal here is to avoid the water and leave yourself a second shot, over water into an oddly angled green that has two tiers. The top tier tends to funnel back towards the water. Bunkers surround the green and to top things off, you may have a gallery watching your approach and putt from the balcony directly behind the green. Itās fun and intimidating at the same time!
I asked several members and Assistant Professional Mike Foley the same question and, interesting enough, all agreed that the risk/reward par 5, Number 8 was their favorite. At 512 yards from the Blue Tees, a well-struck drive off the tee over the left fairway bunker on the right leaves you with a decision. The rest of the hole plays downhill and a good drive will leave around 225 yards to the green. Again, itās downhill, which makes it play shorter, however there is a pond in front of the green that you must carry. Something else to consider is pin location. If itās front, it is slightly above water level. If itās a back pin, the upper level of the green sits about four feet higher. Itās the ultimate risk/reward hole on the course.
My favorite was Number 10, a 531-yard par 5 that I almost reached in two. Fairway bunkers on either side create a narrow landing area for your drive and the waste bunker dotted with grass islands that make up the right side of the fairway is an imposing obstacle to overcome on your layup. The double-tiered green demands a good long look if you want to score well here ā unfortunately I did not!
Even the short par 3, 9th hole (110 yards/Blue Tees) requires a certain amount of distance control and accuracy. Although itās short, itās all carry over sand, and with the green being very shallow, the two back bunkers see a lot of play. Number 7 is a short but interesting hole. It plays 346 yards from the Blue Tees and, with a right-side pin placement, 9 out of 10 players will have to play their approach shot over or under a massive moss-draped oak tree. Find the fairway bunker on the left off the tee and big numbers await.
After your round, do what many locals and other golfers do and visit the restaurant in the Old South-style clubhouse. They have a tremendous menu and, of course, your favorite post-golf libations. Now itās your turn to sit in a porch rocker and offer encouragement on fellow golfersā approach to the 18th green.
No round at Caledonia is complete without a souvenir of the dayās events and the pro shop can hook you up with a hat, shirt or towel from your favorite designer, complete with the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOverall, a decent course with a fair layout & some fun holes, especially on # 18 hitting over the marsh flats to the green. However, the price to pay is far too steep at $131 when there are plenty of courses in the area for far cheaper that are just as good where you could play 2 rounds for the same price. About half the greens needed some serious work with large patches of no grass at all or freshly laid sod that didnt blend, which made approach shots & putting very difficult. Also, the doubling up on tee times at 1 & 10 (obviously for the extra $$$) caused our round to be over 5 hrs long. Our tee time was 7:30am, the first tee time available, and our round was over 5 hrs long which included the starter letting a 3 some tee off before us because they were only playing 9 holes.. We made the turn and had to sit behind 4 groups of 4 each which made the back 9 a long and hot 3+ hrs, after breezing through the front 9 around 2 hrs with our own 4 some. No ranger to make folks keep pace and many went ball hunting every hole in front of us in the woods and ponds. Lastly, no driving range on site either, as you have to go to the sister course True Blue across the street to use the range......
For $131 a person, the experience overall was very subpar. Plenty of other courses in the area that offer the same experience for far less money spent where you could play 2 full rounds for the same price for well under 4 hrs time. The price here, doesn't come close to matching experience. Highly recommend spending $131 elsewhere. Very disappointing experience overall.
Edit: apparently they aren't telling anyone about the issue with the greens, which seems to be a combination of things, unless you ask and they have charged you an arm and a leg to play there. Shady treatment of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFirst off, I have to say Caledonia is a beautifully designed course. MIke Strantz was a phenomenal architect, and it was a privilege to play a course that he designed. The Good: A fabulous course design with lush fairways, that is well manicured from tee to green. Throughout the course were colorful flowers that helped accentuate the beauty of the course. The staff was friendly, and the starter was helpful to suggest hitting some bunker shots to warm up as their sand was different and rather thick. The Bad: 1. No range to warm up. Upon check in we were notified that in order to hit golf balls we would have to drive to their sister course,True Blue, as Caledonia does not have a working driving range. Balls were complimentary, but the last thing we wanted to do was get back into the car to drive a mile or two to another golf course after checking in. They start people off both the front and the back. And even though the front side is an excellent layout, I found the backside to be the superior side. Thus ending the round on 9 instead of 18 is a bit of a letdown. 18 is stunning! Greens/Price. I booked online and wasn't notified that the greens had been punched and dressed a week and a half before. Paying full price for punched greens just doesn't seem right.
Overall it was a good experience. I would love to play it again when the greens are up to par with the rest...
