This is a great stopping point on the AT and the only structure on the trail, at least that was what I was told. They have microwavable food and frozen pizza they will bake for you and lots of camping gear and AT merch. The view from the outside porch is awesome, lots of picnic tables. The staff can give you a pack shake down to help you get rid of unnecessary equipment. Shoes of hikers are in the tree here. The two missing stars are for two reasons. First, these winding roads are a magnet for motorcycles and they go roaring by in large numbers. If you stay at the nearby cabins you'll here them all night long. Also, you have to cross that highway with your packs and traffic zooming past. Second, the hype I read about this place in blogs and books made me believe this was a hiker's paradise. It's a store . . . on the AT . . . makes for a well deserved stop and resupply but I didn't feel it was a place I'd drive hours to see.

Great stop-thru with most everything you could possibly need and more to resupply and keep on keeping on. Also, it's a great place to sit down, eat and relax for a bit after coming off Blood Mountain(for those that are NOBO)! Awesome staff, very helpful and friendly! Hostel, close campsites, food, water and lots of other interesting hikers that are willing to share good tips like apps that work offline and in airplane mode to show exactly where you are on the trail (Guthook's AT Guide), but never let that be your only way to get info. Anything and everything can happen and Neels Gap also sells all the maps and books you may need for a partial or thru-hike! I recommend having a map/guide above anything else. I can't wait to hit the trail again and Neels Gap will be my starting point to finish the rest of Georgia! I started out with the nickname Tinkerbell (Tink), but soon acquired the trail name ~Scar~..... Good luck everyone!

Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Neels Gap is a haven for nature enthusiasts and hikers alike. The picturesque landscapes and well-maintained trails make it a quintessential destination for outdoor adventures. The staff's warm hospitality at the outfitter store adds a personal touch to the experience. The Appalachian Trail crossing at Neels Gap is a symbolic milestone for thru-hikers, and the Mountain Crossings store offers a unique selection of gear and expert advice. The charming mountain vistas, combined with the friendly atmosphere, create a memorable retreat for those seeking solace in the great outdoors. Neels Gap is a gem in the Appalachian Trail's crown, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature.
