The Fields. Sitting in LaGrange, GA. 6600 from the blues and 6100 from the whites. $42 with a cart. $26 to walk. You can walk this, in fact and I wouldn’t mind when the weather is better. The terrain of the area (south of Atlanta) as you can expect is gentler than the terrain north of I-20. Pastures of high grass surround “fields” of shortgrass fairway to create an interesting and challenging yet compelling golf course. A blend of Hardwood Forest and open "farmland". Oaks, Poplars, Sycamores, Pines, Elms, Ashes, dot the landscape. There is no "rough" to be found here, only seemingly endless wildflowers and high grasses to lose your ball in. Tee boxes are built into the land. The green complexes tilt naturally with the slope of the terrain. Expect thin and horizontal greens, long and narrow greens. Expect anything but boring greens. They were in excellent condition and were lightning quick. Nearly all of them had undulation and unique contour of some sort.. Balls truly roll out here (The shortgrass combined with the hardpan ground). You should consider the rollout of your shots because of this. You need to play the ground game more to move your way around. If you position yourself well, you'll get better angles around hazards and at greens. Speaking of hazards, each 9 has a small stone wall cutting the fairway forcing you to conquer it or go around it. One thing about this place, it's rough around the edges. Don’t expect quality cart paths, tubs of water, on demand cart refreshments, loads of amenities. Come here to experience what golf is meant to be and can be with good design. Certainly the most unique public golf course I’ve played in the state of GA. Will I go back? Absolutely. Big shoutout to the architect, the superintendent, and the especially greenskeepers. They've done an outstanding job on conditioning in this hot and...
Read moreWe drove quite a ways to play The Fields on Monday of this week and had an absolute blast. The natural topography of the land coupled with intense firmness and wide fairways creates for an immensely enjoyable playing experience. There are many blind shots so a wealth of patience, course knowledge (or the aid of someone who plays the golf course regularly), and solid decision making skills will be of great benefit. After holing a wedge for eagle on the second (humble brag), I hit a 4-iron off the tee on the downhill par-four third hole that must have rolled 75 yards or longer, hung a right turn, and kept me on the edge of my metaphorical seat until the ball stopped rolling. Using the clubhouse and highpoint of the property, the course does a tremendous job of creating a focal point which the player plays away from on two extremely enjoyable par-fives on the first and tenth holes, while creating the feeling of a triumphant finish to both the front and back nines with uphill shots encouraging carries over bunkers on both nine and eighteen. The par-threes at The Fields certainly will not challenge a player's length, but are absolutely devious. The fescue, short grass mounding around greens, and rock walls in multiple fairways a la North Berwick create a Scottish feel around the golf course and give players tons of options. We met the owner and architect's son before we left and he could not have been nicer. We told him we had driven from SC after reading about their golf course online and he very graciously gave me the piece of merchandise I was about to purchase. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my day at The Fields and look forward to returning at some point. Thirty dollars for this golf course on Mondays is an...
Read morePlayed the Day after thanksgiving and it was pouring rain the whole time, so this review come with a grain of salt. This course is one of the more interesting designs that I’ve played, it provides one of the best mixes of risk reward holes that I’ve experience, each tee shot is a challenge and there are some that to bomb as far as possible (#5 and #6), and others when bunting a 6i is probably enough (#3 or #10), the challenge is there from the fairway as well where you are met with a myriad of hazards, green shapes sizes and options. I felt that anyone who can think themselves around the course can post a good number, but its easy to find yourself in a bad position thinking “why am I here?!?” The conditions were superb in the weather, somehow the greens were running fast and still had some bounce in them. They had some standing water on a couple greens, but most played perfectly fine in the rain. Can wait to go out again in summertime and...
