When it's not busy, this is a really nice place to hang out, relax and watch other boats go up and down the river.
Visitors to the Island have been doing a nice job of keeping the place clean, too I have noticed.
As I understand from the marine sheriff, the west side of the Island is open to boaters but the east side is not. The east side is open to boat moring, but you can't actually go on the beach like you can on the west side. Nor can you explore the interior Island and there are signs that remind you of this.
The history of the island is interesting. If you visit the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle, there is a display that shows some old pictures and tells about Sugar Island activity in its earlier days.
The Island is in the Detroit River, just a few short miles north of the historic Detroit River Light and just west of the Livingston Channel, just east of Grosse Ile.
