SHORT VERSION OF MY REVIEW:
It is nearly impossible to find a place more suitable to skydive than at Texas Skydiving Center (TSD). If you're wondering about where to go, then just go here. Whether you are doing a tandem with some friends or family, looking to do your very first AFF jumps, or just coming out as a fun jumper, this is the best place to go near Austin.
MY CIRCUMSTANCES:
I came out to TSD for a week in order to take my AFF course and had the goal of doing my first 7 AFF jumps to reach solo status. The only skydiving experience I had was one tandem that I had done in Miami four years prior. I was staying in Bastrop the whole time which is a perfect location because it is the same distance to both Austin and TSD. My AFF instructor, Sarah, couldn't have been better, and I was thoroughly trained with everything I needed to know for my first jumps, especially some excellent training for emergency procedures! And after a week of jumping I had done 14 total jumps and was already feeling much more comfortable in free fall (being the scaredy cat that I am)!
LONG VERSION OF MY REVIEW:
WHERE DO I START WITH TEXAS SKY DIVING CENTER (TSD) ?!?!
THE PEOPLE: For me, the people are the most important factor when it comes to any extreme sport like skydiving. You are putting your life in the hands of people whom you have never met before, and it's crucial to know that these people are: always keeping SAFETY as their No. 1 priority PASSIONATE about what they do warm and WELCOMING you into their "sky family" KNOWLEDGABLE to the highest degree CARE about making their customers have an unforgettable experience EXPERIENCED in the sport to the extent that they feel more comfortable falling through the sky at 120mph than they do running to their car
THE DROP ZONE: The drop zone is a huge field over 100 acres in area with a gravel runway running diagonally through the middle. So, it gives a huge area to land. Even for a beginner like me, I was able to land perfectly fine even in high winds. In addition, there are a dozen or so donkeys that roam the property. Petting these "therapy donkeys" provides the perfect remedy for the pre-jump heebie jeebies. But those aren't the only animals around. You can feel free to explore the property where you can find llamas (including a baby llama just over a month old!), guinea fowl, chickens, pigs, rabbits, etc. As you can see, it's the kind of place where kids wouldn't have trouble hanging out in as their parents go for a skydive! There is even a primitive playground with swings and monkey bars.
THE EXPERIENCE: Normally a jump consists of you getting into the plane with your instructor or other jumpers. The plane will climb up to 10,000' for tandems and 11,000' for AFF students and fun jumpers. You can expect the ride to be about 20 min. As you ride up in the airplane the anticipation builds, and many people (including myself) find this to be the scariest part of the experience. Once you jump, you can't help but enjoy what is happening to you. A free fall of 35-45 seconds reaching speeds of 120mph, and then the main canopy opens. You will then enjoy about 5-6 minutes gliding around the sky like a bird, during which you will have the chance to BREATHE and take a look around you at what the world looks like from 4,000' in the air. And, of course, if you're doing a tandem, every landing is super smooth!
In reference to poor reviews from previous years:
TSD is under new management since September, 2016. Two of the instructors who have been working at TSD for years decided to buy the company from the previous owner/operator who was the cause of much dismay that can be seen in the reviews from years past. The team at TSD is very accommodating to their customers wishes and needs, and booking jumps, payment, video/pictures, are all handled in a very ethical and...
Read moreSo apparently this facility is by far the WORST place to do business here in central Texas. I am just wanting to voice MY OPINION of this and Ms. Cindy you are one of the RUDEST people I have EVER met. Not only will I be writing a review on here but I will continue to do so and post it all over Twitter AND Facebook so the whole world knows how awful this business is. I bought a Groupon back in March for my mothers Birthday so she could go sky diving and knock one of the items on her bucket list off. She has always wanted to do this and I've always been for it since I am an adventure seeker like she is. So today was the last day to use is. Prior to today my mom tried calling several times but she'd be told that they weren't jumping that day or anytime soon due to weather or various other excuses like not enough people etc. So on the Groupon it says call to make a reservation by 08/05/2013 okay so I call for her so that I can make the reservation later this year in the fall when its cooler and she doesn't lose the Groupon. As soon as the phone is answered and I tell CINDY what it is I have ( A GROUPON) her tone of voice IMMEDIATELY changes. She become rude with me and starts to tell me to read her the fine print. I ask her why and she says it has to be used TODAY and they aren't doing jumps so I am going to lose my money. I am in awe at this point confused because that's not what it says and I paid quite a chunk of money for this gift. I tell her it does't say it has to be used by today that it says I must make a reservation by today. She begins to raise her voice and I tell her I will call her back once I read over the Groupon again and speak to the person who needs to make this Reservation. I tell my mom whats wrong and she calls them. Same story only this time CINDY is claiming that they have been having problems with Groupon not putting on there the fine print and its not her fault. Then my mother tells her that we will be contacting Groupon about the matter to get a refund and she quickly changes her tone and says no she doesn't want to put words in there mouth that its not exactly what they have said but nonetheless my mother insists and then CINDY gets worse raising her voice (at a customer who was planning on bringing along others myself included and paying FULL PRICE for us me, my husband and sister to jump as well which we told her and she continued to NOT CARE!) She also says that and I quote "We wouldn't want someone like you here ANYWAYS!" I'm sorry but that sounded a little racist considering my mother has a very thick Hispanic accent ....I was NOT happy. She continued saying Groupon has been refusing to put on their Groupons that it must be used and reserved by 08/05/2013 and it was too bad so sad we just lost $ for not using it correctly. I was furious and my mother decided that she was just going to hang up and let her know that we wouldn't be arguing with her about this matter. Cindy is the manager of this facility supposedly and I think that this place should be closed down. FYI I will be reporting you to the Better Business Bureau and also writing to local media centers to follow up with an investigation on your facility!!! In the end I spoke with Groupon who were NOT AT FAULT and they went ahead an offered me 1 of 2 things to either A. Talk to them on my behalf and make the reservation or B. Refund my $ Needless to say I Chose B. WHY? well if this woman is this way can you imagine how she would react if there was an emergency or while jumping??? AND THANK GOD I CHOSE WHAT I DID read below and you will see this isn't' the FIRST TIME MS.Cindy ROYALY messes up. Last note PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM I promise you all you will get is a headache from having to deal with this company!!! I RATE...
Read moreQuirky skydiving center complete with llamas, donkeys, pigs and funky foul. Definitely suited for the tourist/out of town-er looking to get his/her skydiving experience. NOT for those who have serious ambitions to procure an A license. I recommend booking as early in the day as possible. Ensures your experience isn't inadvertently delayed by equipment/weather issues. I recommend checking the weather and calling/emailing the center early that morning to ensure you are actually going to jump. Remember: once you pay - you do not receive a refund - even if the weather is not cooperating and you have to resked days later.
I opted for the first solo freefall experience. My instructor, Sarah, was awesome. High energy, charismatic, gung-ho to get you pumped up for your skydive while learning the basics. My jump "instructor" James hooked up w/ me approx 30 minutes before the jump. We chit-chatted and that was the extent of our introduction. Super nice guy. Very relaxed, very competent. I enjoyed his presence the most. I would have liked the ground training/instructor and my jump instructor to have been the same human. Would have made me feel more comfortable, built trust. Probably a personal comfort level issue. Regardless - I jumped anyways. No issues. Cindy, the owner, was all over the place. I admire her dedication to running a business. Girl Power! I get the operational side of running a business, so I highly recommend she get more organized or more "support" personnel. Her frenetic activity cast an uneasy shadow on the operation. From limping to the ATV to scare llamas off the runway to trying to plan a manifest after many delays to attempting to provide radio support to "cherry" jumpers (me!) was too much for one human despite being a woman(Ha!). You know what they say abt multi-tasking: it ultimately results in one human doing many things - poorly. Delegate, Cindy. Operational pause to regroup, retask and better support the mission. Last, but certainly not least, was my personal fav - Autumn - the angst-y teenager trying her hardest to provide manifest support while maintaining her best Violet from the Incredibles persona. My final words are to her stepdad: Dude - let her jump. She'll continue to suck at her job if she doesn't have the context, the enthusiasm, the understanding of what she's supporting. You can only fill so many soda machines before...
