I have nothing but good things to say about Squaw Valley. Iāve been waiting a long time to play here and I finally had the opportunity this past weekend and I was not disappointed one bit.
Iāll start with the service side of the courses. The guys behind the front desk were very friendly and informative. Thereās a great selection of gear in case you forget anything. The greens had been aerated earlier in the week and they were knocking 50% the normal green fee to make up for it. Thatās good management and service because a lot of places arenāt that generous. The snack bar had a great variety of drinks, food and beer. The snack bar attendant had a nice personality as well.
The outside staff was great too. Carts were clean with new pencils and cards. There are no water jugs on the course but there are coolers of free water bottles located at several different areas of the course which was great. Thereās a pavilion and outdoor area which would make a tournament here very comfortable. The practice area is arranged well. Putting greens for both courses, short game and chipping area, and pretty good size range area.
I played Apache because I prefer links style courses but I was told by some locals that the other course is just as cool with a little more undulation. Apache is friendly from the blue tees and Iām not a very long hitter. The course overall was in great shape considering the light amount of rain this spring. There may be some bear spots close to the cart paths but I think itās fine and feels kind of characteristic of a links course. The greens were still very sandy from aeration but you could still see a line and play it. The local guys said the greens are normally really fast and smooth and I believe them.
The only thing I would say that could have improved the day would be if the pro shop had tried to consolidate the single golfers into an existing group or put them together. I was by myself and itās not the courseās fault but things got a little jammed up on the back nine. There was a marshal riding around making sure things did not get to out of hand. But Iāve never worked in the pro shop so Iām not sure how one goes about handling parings
Overall this course is great. I agree with a review from earlier and that I play all over DFW but if I lived closer to this course I would probably look into a membership. If things stay the way they are with Squaw Valley, then it will always be...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBeautiful course and I really like it, but with a big caveat: low life club thieves abound. Iāve played the course only 3 times and had issues 2 of those times. One time I left two wedges by a green and realized it two holes later. Some old guy had picked them up but acted like he didnāt have them initially, until I just grabbed them out of his bag. Two weeks later I took my son to play for his birthday. He left a wedge by a green and realized it 2 holes later. He drove back talking to every group on the way. No one fessed up and the club was gone. He said one of the groups acted sketchy. Told the marshal and he didnāt have any luck either. The marshal also said someone left a 2 iron on a tee box and it was stolen earlier that day.
If you play there donāt let your clubs out of your sight. Iāve been playing for 40 years and have never had any issue at any course ever. But Iāve played this course 3 times and had issues. It has really left a bad taste in my mouth. And thatās a real shame.
Edit: I'm editing these since there is no way to respond to an owner's comment. I appreciate them responding. The marshal and the guy at the pro shop were both very nice and professional, so this is not a knock on them. I talked to them both extensively the day my son lost his wedge. I will say this: if this course attracts the type of people who would steal someone's clubs, maybe they need to post signs and have more people patrolling the course. Granted, it is our fault for accidentally leaving a club by a green. No question. But this happens frequently and if this course has an inordinately high number of club thieves, maybe something should be done. Otherwise, the low-life thieves are going to keep away those of us who simply want to enjoy a round of golf without being overly concerned people will steal our stuff. :-( Personally, I don't plan to go back. Having these issues 2 out of 3 times is enough to tell me that I don't want to be on that...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe played the links course which isnāt much of a ālinksā course. I would avoid this course until something is done about the greens or the price drops. The layout is very simple as every hole just about is straight. Fairways are nice but the greens are hideous. Paying this much per round we expected a great experience but it was frustrating at best mainly because of the greens. The green conditions are horrendous. The starter is very slow and we sat almost 10 minutes at the tee waiting on him to figure out the tablet he was using. The cart girls finally stopped at our group when we were on hole 16. They passed us multiple times before stopping near the end of our round. This isnāt the friendliest place youāll ever play but that could easily be overlooked if it werenāt for such awful, awful greens. I would not play here until something is done.
Update: the review left by the course is laughable at best. This wasnāt a one day greens were bad situation. There is no way these greens have been good for a while. Tee to fringe: great and simple course. You donāt stand a chance on the greens when you actually do find more grass than sand/dirt there will be lines (I assume from poor mowing) from edge to edge. You would have better luck putting on a plinko board. Avoid this course and high fees until the greens are...
