Very mixed feelings here. I am ALL for supporting local growers and congratulate Rudd Farm for their 20th year of strawberry offerings. As a girl, I was fortunate to be able to go strawberry picking with my family; I was so happy to have even a pandemic-modified opportunity to take our youngest family member to a farm this year. Even from his car seat he was thrilled to see the fields and farm equipment. We endured the 1.5 hour line on the off-ramp and the berries were SO worth it - beautiful color, flavour, and mightily impressive size (we've the makings for the best strawberry shortcake ever)! So why only 3 stars? A single person can sour the impression of an entire operation, especially when that person is the first you interact with. We noted as we pulled into the drive the thin, grey-haired, middle-aged woman assisting with traffic control and greeting buyers approached nearly each vehicle, exchanged a few words with the drivers, and waved them on - nearly every vehicle - those she did not approach or bother to gesture towards/greet (including us) were vehicles occupied by Latino and Black families - there were four of us that I could see in the line. Skipped us and went right for the Caucasian driver between me and the Latino family, ignored us even though I slowed and rolled down my window to go and exchange a greeting with the Caucasian driver on my tail. Despite the magnificent bounty of the farm and the geniality of the other hands manning the line (and don't we all appreciate their willingness to work registers and bring baskets and keep things moving so efficiently in such a peculiar time) I don't know that we'll be back when things get back to normal for berry picking and pumpkins. If we'd been able to turn around without wreaking havoc I think we would've left right then. No one wants to spend their hard earned money where they're made to feel unwelcome, unwanted, and uncomfortable and I'd worry if we returned if her kind of attitude and bias wouldn't pop up elsewhere and spoil a fun outing for our little one. It certainly spoilt the ebullient feeling among the adults during this outing and forced us into faking smiles and distracting conversation from the slight. Not the best way to spend a lovely Spring afternoon, though we are quite thankful for really the best berries we've...
Read moreI wish I was able to experience what these other customers were able to experience at Rudd Farm. My husband and our 2 boys set out to Rudd Farm for a fun family day of strawberry picking. We were especially excited that we could actually walk around & pick the strawberries; they had just closed the drive thru. Unfortunately we were greeted so terribly. This was our first time at the farm & without any designated parking we weren’t quite sure were to park and get out. We saw that there was a yard sign out that said the drive thru was closed so we were looking to park. There was an older woman with a neck length bob standing outside that saw us & pointed to the direction where we could park. Well we started driving to park beside the other cars that were parked just a tad bit further down, just to keep the parking uniform since there weren’t any designated parking spots. As soon as my husband started to move to park beside the other cars, the older lady started shaking her had with a look of disgust & threw her hands up. Confused, my husband stopped to make sure he wasn’t doing anything wrong and I rolled the window down to see what the issue may have been. The older lady stated “Drive thru is closed!” I was utterly confused. Why was she so upset and shaking her head at us like we were children? We were just going to park beside the cars that were ALREADY PARKED & were FURTHER DOWN than where we were currently at. I thought it would be pretty obvious with the sign saying drive thru closed right in front of us & seeing the other cars parked down further that we were just following suite. I let her know we were just going to park beside the other cars. However, we decided at that moment to just leave & not do any business with Rudd Farm. To be sort of ridiculed & treated like children on our very first visit was very disheartening and put a damper on...
Read moreWe look so forward to Rudd Farm's strawberry season every year! These are some of the sweetest, big and juicy berries in the county! This year, they have an excellent organized drive up system (we went yesterday, Saturday). Once we turned in to the property, we were directed into a line of cars that circled all the way around the strawberry fields and a couple of lakes until we were close to the entrance again, and a young lady came up to our car and asked what we were getting. We asked for 2 baskets, and she put the order ticket onto the windshield. Then, a man brought the baskets to the car, we paid, and in less than 10 minutes we were out and on our way. They usually let you choose between picking the berries yourself, or buying pre-picked ones. Either way, we've always gotten the freshest, tastiest, most beautiful strawberries at Rudd's Farm. They also have a building you can go in where they sell seasonal vegetables like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. The prices for the strawberries is reasonable...$5 a quart or $15 for a big basket (a gallon). Highly recommend...
