Grocery Salvage — Local services in Hammond

The people inside are friendly and the deals are good. The parking lot...needs work. The multiple side conditioning units or refrigerator units on a number of places either have mold or merely look like they do, which is worrying for a place that sells food. The dumpster area needs cleaning, desperately. Lots of broken eggs on the ground that surprised me because it didn't stink from the heat, yet. The inside isn't the prettiest of stores, and you do need to watch the dates on the food items, most don't matter because salt doesn't really go bad but some items that contain perishable items might be pushing it a little to go too far beyond the date. The real gem is the mix and match ice cream items. Lots of unusual flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. Excellent prices on the ice cream. This small independent grocery store sells salvaged shelved items like name brand cereals various frozen items and some select dairy items at bargain prices. I got some amazing deals on high end yogurts that cost 4 times as much in the regular store.

The staff member was friendly 😊 working hard to stock the shelves, run the register and, wearing a mask and was practicing social distancing too. ✅😷

Be aware that it is a bit grimey inside by the usual grocery store standards but this didn't bother me as the items I purchased were in sealed containers. Seems like the old country corner supermarket from my youth... I kind of felt like I was going back in time. A great experience and I'm glad I stopped in! Will be back...

This was my go to store for items. I usually look at the date on the items because a lot of them are out of date. I bought 2 boxes of pancakes mix since my grands love for me to cook them when they come over. This time for some reason I didn't check the date and when I open the box there were bugs crawling through the box. Opened the other box and same thing. I bought this on 7/28/2024. The expired date is 11/1/2023. Called the store twice today 8/3/2024 with no answer and they are open. They more than likely are looking at the caller ID.
