Merion is a crown jewel in the world of golf courses. In Ardmore, among the urban sprawl of Philadelphia, lies a battleground. Not of wars fought with guns and fury, but with irons and willpower. It is not only historic, but it has endured the test of time more than any other golf course in America. Merion Golf Club, with its storied East Course, is both a relic of the past and a challenge of the present.
From the outset, Merion is deceptive. Its length, shorter than the monsters of today, may lull one into a false sense of complacency. But do not be fooled. Like the swift currents beneath a calm sea, Merion demands respect. Do not forget that the winning score of the US Open was over par.
The Hugh Wilson design is a masterpiece in strategy. It's not just about power but precision. The small, treacherous greens and cunningly placed bunkers speak of an era where the course was the ultimate riddle, and the golfer, the eager reader, trying to decode its secrets.
Merion's bunkers, with their trademark wicker baskets, are not just hazards. They're icons. Each stands tall, whispering tales of yesteryears, of legends like Hogan and his immortal 1-iron, of battles waged and victories hard-earned.
The course is not about brute strength; it's about the dance, the balance, the rhythm. Itâs akin to a well-penned story where every shot, every choice, weaves the plot, leading you down a path of introspection and realization.
Water, at Merion, is both friend and foe. The streams and creeks, like the ever-flowing passage of time, wait silently, ready to claim any errant shots, teaching lessons in humility.
Yet, amid this stern test, there is undeniable beauty. The lush fairways, the age-old trees standing sentinel, the club's history etched into every blade of grass. They beckon, inviting one to be a part of the legacy.
In the heart of Ardmore, Merion stands not just as a test of golf but as a testament to the spirit of the game. Itâs where history, challenge, and beauty entwine, offering a narrative that is both timeless and enduring.
To play Merion is to journey through the pages of golf's grand epic. And as with all great tales, it's not the end but the journey that remains...

So Iâm at The famed Merion golf club asking directions from two guys on the range.... mid thirties maybe older and asked if they would take outside money in the pro shop? They were great and said no problem. One asked how the Pats were going to be and teasing said we have no receivers but hoped we could meet again in the super bowl!!! Next he says âdid you and your son bring clubs? We could join them!!! I explained that we had to catch a flight but what an offer. Nice guys!
Next we went to the pro shop to grab a shirt and some other memorabilia with my son when the pro says â guys, do you have some other attire that you could change into?â We say, sorry, we are just picking up a few things and will only be a second. He says ok but please be timely so you donât get uncomfortable around a member and I wonât lose my job! Sure sure no problem and thank you. Mind you, we are in casual cloths that I felt ok being on the grounds but surely not golf attire!
As we pick out some items a older gentleman walks in and immediately says âwhat are they doing here?â.......pro explains and the guy says, âmove them alongâ.
Next thing is mind boggling to me......the guy then says to the pro âI just witnessed something that I have never seen before, a man is giving a lesson on the practice green!!! I want you to inform him that players play and professional teach! No lessons on the practice green. REALLY??? Canât help a buddy with his putting prior to a round????? Happens every day at every course in the World but obviously not here!
The pro says he will take care of it then asks nicely if we are all set? We cut it short feeling bad for the pro and left!!!
Lesson learned for my son........donât ever be a pretentious #%^*|! Like that older obvious member and donât ever treat anyone like that!!!!
Con says âI wish we could have said letâs go play we were just invited by the younger memberâ!!!
Sad...
