I attended the 31 May to 3 Jun 2024 Comprehensive Precision Rifle course. The quality of personalized training I received in this course matches or exceeds the best of the best training I received in 40 years of aviation service in the military and the airlines. Shannon, Brandon, and Dillon are top notch (and that is just three of several more), and treat each student with respect while constantly challenging students to break bad habits and build better ones. Shannon’s commitment to excellence is infectious to all…e.g. “Nice first shot impact at 700 yards, now make the correction and hit it in the center.” Safety is paramount, and they go above and beyond to teach students inherently safe shooting practices under awkward and/or stressful shooting situations. The instructor to student ratio is one to four, facilitating the personal attention it takes to help each student dramatically improve. The multiple ranges are stunning in diverse training opportunities, and the classroom, pro shop, and overnight accommodations are equally immaculate. If there is a better shooting facility in America (or in the world) which has these kinds of accomplished shooters on their staff, I would have to see it to believe it…the day our training ended, after saying our goodbye’s, Shannon and Dillon and Brandon were working on the grounds, painting the targets we had used, maintaining equipment, etc., etc. I also want to recognize the student contact and behind the scenes administrative work that Shannon’s wife Julie does…she serves the instructor cadre and students very well. This facility speaks professionalism and excellence, but it would not be this way without the personal sacrifices the staff makes to keep this complex in immaculate condition.
Here are 20/20 hindsight recommendations…
In summary, this is a best of the best course. I plan to go to the Alumni...
Read moreShort version: Do whatever you can to attend a class here -- it's a world class facility with outstanding instruction. A class at K&M should be on your bucket list.
Longer version: I have done some firearms training at a few locations, mostly shotgun and pistol. Still, my overall experience with instructional training is fairly limited, especially when it comes to rifle. I read that K&M Precision Rifle Training was a premier destination, so I made the decision to take a course there.
I recently attended an April session of the Basic Long Range Precision Rifle Course. I had registered back in September of last year, as classes fill up quickly. I knew I was in for a good experience because nearly every question I had was already anticipated and answered in the welcome packet that was sent upon enrollment.
The facility, more than 200 acres and an absolute shooter's playground, is located in Finger, Tennessee -- about an hour south of Jackson. It is somewhat remote and offers lodging as part of the enrollment fee. I was with a small group (my brother and my son) and we elected to upgrade and stay in the cabin. The cost was very affordable and worth the decision. The beds were extremely comfortable and everything was spotless. (The facility is more than seven years old now and everything (literally everything) looks like it was just built yesterday.) It is in near-perfect condition and when you walk around, you start to notice endless details that not only point to the level of thought that went into creating the facility, but also the resources that went into the buildout.
I will not go into great detail about the course, as I gathered that, although the basics of the class are consistent, some elements do change from time to time. Rather than convey an exercise that might excite (or bore) you and then find out it has been dropped from the curriculum, I will say that every single slide in the classroom, every single trigger pull on the range has been clearly thought out to get the very most out of your limited time at the complex.
K&M's training is a fire hose of information. From an early start to late afternoon each day, we were given classroom and range instruction that was a lot and often. Thinking about it now, after the fact, that sounds pretty intense but it wasn't at the time. Yes, there was a lot of information and there was a tiny bit of math (!) and it was fairly nonstop -- but during the time, it didn't seem that way. Everything was presented in a manner that made so much sense, that was entirely digestible, and easy to retain. Going back now, a couple weeks later, and looking at the slides presented over the two days (and my limited notes - the slides were so comprehensive), I still retain nearly all of the information -- and better yet -- understand the why behind all of it. I've thought to myself about what might be dropped or changed to slow the pace a bit, but after it's over, I wouldn't change a thing. The pace is quick, but I only had two days there and while there are some things I didn't perfect while I was there, almost everything I can train on at my home range.
The staff at K&M is friendly and helpful. I can't speak to the other courses, but this approachable attitude is exactly what you want for a basic course. While it is helpful to have some experience with a scope and rifle coming into the course, you don't need to be anything close to an expert. Shannon Kay and his instructors are happy to help and K&M is definitely a place where there are no bad questions.
Ultimately, there are many places you can go to take a basic course in long range rifle, but these three elements -- the facility, the well-planned and delivered coursework, and the helpful and professional instructors -- make K&M the premier destination for training. No other place I have been to even comes close. I walked in with a fairly limited skill set behind a rifle and did things I never thought I...
Read moreI just completed the 4 day comprehensive precision shooting class and it was incredible. I came in with no formal training and no real time on the gun. I was excited, nervous, and intimidated. The first day in class Shannon and his team set my mind at ease. It was clear from the get go these guys were humble and there to help get us to where we wanted to be. I started out struggling a bit on the line. All the instructors were there to help and teach through the issues, with patience. When you are struggling and frustrated it’s easy to lose focus, but they knew how to calm me down and get me back on track. On day two Brandon Hembree (instructor) noticed I was struggling again. He came over and watched me and quickly found the issue. From that point on I was shooting decent but had many fundamentals to focus on. Shannon and Kevin’s experience running these classes were very evident. They had a great balance of having high expectations yet supportive and understanding when battling through mental errors. Dillon was also incredible helping us work through bad tendencies and mental errors. The class work and shooting the first two days were well balanced. The final two days were all shooting and they ramped up the drills and expectations quickly. The structure was perfect. By day three they knew our tendencies and where we needed the work. They also knew our skill level and instead of every person doing the same thing across the board, they increased the difficulty for those who were shooting better, and kept the normal difficulty for others. Throughout these days it was crazy to see how much work these guys put into this class. They aren’t just running it off a script, they truly watch, make adjustments, push us, and support us. While we had little breaks these guys were hustling setting up the next course. The facility is truly second to none. The courses they have are incredible and they are all a 30 second ride away. They also have a nice pro shop. I got some advice from Shannon on what scope he recommended, because I wanted to upgrade. He walked me through the ones he had, gave me his input and what he felt was the best bang for my buck. Kevin also helped as well. They never once tried to push into a sale or talked me into buying anything. I purchased the newest scope they had and these guys had it installed and ready to go the next morning. They also installed a new trigger for me. I’m telling you, this is the best precision class, range and instructors in the nation. By the end of day 4 I was a new shooter. I felt far more confident in my shots and fundamentals. I still a ton of work to do but they’ve given me the confidence and a plan on what to train moving forward. If you are new at precision shooting and considering taking a class, do not hesitate! If you want to learn, get pushed, have some fun and get better, this is the place to do it!! I hope this review, yet long, gives you the confidence to get out there, you will leave much better and you’ll definitely have “the...
