On April 22nd I registered for a $70 Mixed Media Painting 6 week class beginning June 18th through Blue Ridge Community College’s Continuing Education program. I rearranged my work schedule and put in vacation time so I could attend this class. When I registered the website mentioned that I would receive a supply list via email. I did not, so I emailed the teacher Paula Wynn and finally received one.
Over the next 2 months I purchased a long list of supplies from multiple stores tally over $150. June 18th comes and I am at the offsite location as directed by my registration instructions sitting in an empty classroom. I called the teacher Paula Wynn about the situation. Her response? “Oh that class was cancelled this morning. I meant to call you. I’m so sorry.” I told her I was livid and that sorry does not excuse her negligence and asked to speak to her supervisor. I was put on hold for several minutes before her supervisor Jerry Johnson took my call. He explained that he and Paula were both out of the office for several days the week before. I told him Paula informed me the class was cancelled this morning. He then said he was the one who cancelled the class but Paula should have called me. He apologized for her negligence and told me it was not like her to do that. He reassured me that the $70 registration fee would be refunded to me within a few weeks. I told him that I spent over $150 on supplies over the last 2 months, I requested time off work to take this class, and that this was very irresponsible of a college to act this way. I asked if they could give me any sort of credit toward a future class. Jerry told me he could put my name on a list for a Continuing Education Scholarship but no guarantees I would receive anything.
I am flabbergasted by the unprofessionalism of the Blue Ridge Community College Continuing Education program. I will be writing a formal letter to the College President and sharing my...
Read moreWent to student orientation today. Was told I needed to go to the bookstore to get a student ID. Go to bookstore and hop in line. I had no idea my student ID wasn’t covered in tuition. I’ve been to 4 other colleges and never have they required me to pay out of pocket for an ID. Jump back in line to pay. The lady behind the counter was one of the most rude people I’ve ever met. Super inconvenienced that I asked to buy an ID. Very hatefully bosses me around and was rude when I asked if my financial aid would cover it. I understand she was overwhelmed. There was maybe 8 other people in line and 2 other workers though, no need to take her misery out on the students. We were all told to go get ID’s. How are you going to be upset about us doing what we were told and doing your job… not a very great welcoming to new students. The guy behind me walked out without even paying for his stuff because she was hateful to him. Thank god shes working with fresh out of high school conditioned students for the most part and not in the real world. Bless anyone else who has to go get ID’s from her.
I had a terrible experience at B.R.C.C. I was given a F in U.S. History, when I should have been given at least a passing grade. There were only 3 tests, & they asked extremely difficult questions with no multiple choice answers. The college had the final exam on a day where there was the greatest snowstorm in over 10 years, & all of the schools in the county were closed. I was not allowed to retake the final exam. B.R.C.C. is a terrible college. I was not given shelter in Weyers Cave, VA. I had to drive for 2 hours each day to get to the college. I have been warned about Blue Ridge CC in other places. I should have never gone to B.R.C.C., & it was a really good idea for me to stop attending after my fall semester. I have some credits that were good, & could transfer. I had wanted to transfer to UVA. I should not have set such lofty goals. B.R.C.C. is a terrible college, & the sudents that were there in 2008 complained that they were being given Fs.
I would recommend that people look to enroll at a college that gives you a higher chance of graduating...
