It's very beautiful here. I saw my first herd of mountain goats, and that was awesome. Seeing Mt Rushmore too, I never thought I'd get the chance, and I highly recommend it. Deadwood is amazing too, if you're interested in the history and the Wild Bill-ness of it all. Sturgis is awesome if you ride or love Harleys. And there you go, oh, and the Grasslands/Badlands. If you've come this far, what's an hour drive? If you go during the day you can see Prairie Dogs, Bison, and wild Goats, roaming free. Read moreWe wanted to do dispersed camping but it was REALLY hard for us to find a good spot to set up camp in the black hills because it is so hilly, of course. We were able to camp for free - I can't remember now if it was at Breezy Point or Wrinkled Rock, right outside the Rushmore memorial area. Hike to Black Elk Peak was well worth it - bring plenty of water and plan for at least 4 hours, especially if you want to spend a little time at the top.
